Two Steps Forward Three Steps Back

Yesterday was a horrible day. My Dr. has me on Wellbutrin, and I started to feel it working. However, I also started having horrible side effects - including frequent urination.

The Dr. now wants me off of it. He says I can try another medication. However, if the side effects are all the same, why bother.

I am seeing my Therapist today. I am thinking about doing this without drugs, and just the therapy.

Any one have similar situations?

studies have shown that where there is a chemical imbalance behind depression and anxiety that starting the meds earlier helps limit the damage to the brain, according to my doctor. the thing with these meds is they are funny, one may have awful side effects for you while another may not. before you just completely give up, follow your doctor's advice and try another.

as for combatting this without meds, i did. i tried meds for a brief period, but decided i didnt like the way they effected me. i decided not to use meds, but i dont think my problems were related to brain chemistry. i think a lot depends on that as to whether the meds are needed or not. had my therapist deemed them important i would have taken them.

Justtired,

I am on meds for depression and I was lucky; the first combination that the doctor tried worked for me. But I understand that it isn't always so easy. You just have to try whatever the doctor prescribes and see if it helps and how you are otherwise affected. Sometimes it takes awhile to get to a regime that's right for you.

I wouldn't give up on the meds right away. The side effects of different meds in different combinations will vary.

Looking back, I have to say I really wish I had admitted earlier that I needed help with the depression. Denying that, while knowing I must be depressed, just made everything more difficult for me. At first taking the meds was alarming for me beause I could feel the mood change and that recalled my drug abuse problems from my youth. But then I realized I was just being restored to a balance point where I should be, and soon I got used to it.

We are all different, of course, but I have to say that some of the early therapy sessions were pretty rough. I think having the depression under control made it easier for me to make progress and handle the challenges.

Much love,
Larry

hey jt --

I wish you luck with this challenge. I had a 10 day panic attack and decided to go on meds last year in sep: lexapro. I remember thinking: thispanic is not normal I have to do something. The meds made me less shaky and better able to focus. But the effects were weird and I stopped a couple of months ago.

The long and the short of it: I trusted my gut (and docter) and went on them and then when the time came, i decided to stop.

Wellburtrin is a different dtory though: i know several people who are on it, but the two cases of people who went on it recently, to quit smoking, were both intense. One person actually did quit.

The beat on the street is that wellbutrin is fast acting and evens out after a week (hear say).

love,

Jonathon

Keep in mind, not all meds are going to have the same side effects. That is why there are so many different kinds of medications to be used. If one causes frequent urination, or nausea, or rash, well, you can try another and it may well not cause any of those things. When I was initially starting out with medications, I had one (Haloperidol)that almost killed me. Another drug of the same category, but slightly different 'family' (Geodon) worked wonderfully.

I don't know that I know of anyone who has done all this without ever using medication, although one person I know was on it only for several months. I think it is just another tool, like therapy, to help the rest of the work go a little more smoothly.

I wish you luck, whatever you try.
