The UK TV company 'Channel 4' has just aired the first part of a drama called "Sex Traffic"
I don't know if I can watch the second part, and I'm usually OK with film and TV drama's that are powerful in this way.

The drama deals with two sisters from Moldova in the former Eastern Europe / USSR block who get tricked / kidnapped into the sex trade in Europe.
The drama is very graphic, extremely disturbing and apparently very accurate.

I noticed in the closing credits that it was made in conjunction with a Canadian TV company. Channel 4 are also closely tied in with the US company HBO, so it's almost certainly going to appear on screens over there very soon.

It's also very good, the acting, direction and compassion in the story are without fault.

But DON'T watch it if you are easily triggered.

Dave,
I just wanted to add my comments about topics that are addressed in this show.

My country is one of the major centres for world sex trade.
It is incredible bad situation about it.
Local gangs are now very powerful, they earned a lot ot of money in the "business" and seems that no one can touch them.
Sadly but girls practically live in slavery. They have no any basic human rights.
If they have lucky they will be caught by police and returned to their homeland (usually Moldavia or Ukraine). But in most of the cases someone from police would inform gang bosses what police is planning and they would in one hour move girls somewhere else.

The problem is very complex. At present days my country lost majority of all post-war country characteristics so war can not be excuse anymore for such situation.
In relation to that customers for sex services are now different. Just after the war stopped they were usually peacekeeping foreigners from bunch of different international organizations (I do won't put names of them but lets say that they are extremely well known on global stage and huge part of their workforce are coming from countries like US, Canada, UK, France, Italy etc.). Today this is changing very fast, really big companies are knocking to start their activities very fast. They are driven by very cheap and skilled workforce and huge profit possibilities like in rest of the East Europe. So customers are now more and more domestic population from higher classes and managers, from very known intl. companies. (I am talking about companies about you can listen on business news on CNN or CNBCEurope).

The biggest blame is, of course, on authorities of mine country. They are part of the corruption circle and they just pretend that this is not big issue even prostitution is strongly illegal according to law. They have revolutionary "smart" attitudes like: girls are from other countries so who cares for them anyway and lets pretend that spreading of AIDS and other diseases is not important etc.

I am always for individual and human rights, democracy and so on; but in communism era this circus would be stopped in just one day with army and tanks if needed.

In this drama the two sisters are Moldovian, and taken through Bosnia and Albania before being taken to Italy and then onto the UK.
But of course the girls are prisoners and used all the way along the trail.
The drama also depicts the cheapness these gangs put on the girls lives, they sell the girls for $1,000 when 'new' - and the price goes down as they become diseased, drug addicted and alcoholic. Eventually they become worthless to the gangs and are murdered.

The sad aspect of this horrific trade is that it IS a 'trade'
Without customers in the countries the girls end up in the gangs would have no market.
This doesn't excuse their evil trade one bit, but our so-called "1st world countries" MUST do something to kill the demand.

Some people suggest legalising prostitution, but apparently just as many girls end up in Amsterdam as London.

It's the old slave trade, brought bang up to date.
Slavery was abolished by public demand and brave people who sought the slaves freedom and emancipation, and won it.
