I, unfortunately, did not see the Oscars last night, but Tim Robbins spoke out for victims of abuse when he received his award for Mystic River. I was able to find the quote online last night, and thought others might want to read it:

"In the film I play a survivor of abuse and I'd like to say there is no shame and no weakness in seeking help and counselling. It is sometimes the strongest thing you can do to stop the cycle of violence."

Thanks for posting! I didn't see the oscars and appreciated his comments!

Sean,

That is good news. I wonder how many people caught it. With the excitement over the LOTR awards, the point he was making is probably being drowned out.

I know the Oscars are about entertainment, but the best entertainment educates and elevates, too. I haven't seen it (and won't till I have it on DVD at home), but it seems to me that "Mystic River" was a significant opportunity for providing to the public some insight into some of the repurcussions of childhood abuse.

Thanks,

Joe

My wife and I saw it and were moved to tears. As they announced his name, I told my wife that last week I sent a message to him through his non-official website, www.tim-robbins.com (which is not up right now for some reason) requesting that he put aside his political opinions and instead address the issues of those who were sexually abused and, possibly, mention the name of this site. I don't know whether or not he saw it but I was satisfied with his remarks. Here was my post to the messageboard at that site:

I'm not sure whether Mr. Robbins reads this board or not, I would suspect not since most of the posts here seem to have a negative bent. But, if you do read this Mr. Robbins, I hope it is before the Oscars on Sunday night.
I am a 41 year old male survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I have not seen Mystic River (although I grew up about a mile from the river) because I don't know that I can handle the subject matter. From all accounts, however, you did a remarkable job portraying a man who is living with the effects of childhood sexual abuse. My guess is that you had to learn alot about how the whole thing works before you started filming. That being the case, you are more familiar than most with how the suffering continues long after the abuse takes place.
That being said, you may not know that there are precious few resources out there for men who were sexually abused as children. This perpetuates the isolation the victim has suffered most, if not all of his life. But there is help out there, specifically, at the following website: www.malesurvivor.org I urge you to take a few minutes to visit the site and check out the resources they provide for victims and survivors. I can assure you, it has saved many lives.
So, if, per chance, you find yourself at the podium on Sunday night, you could do a great service to the male victims of childhood sexual abuse by mentioning that there is help out there and they can find it at www.malesurvivor.org. Child sexual abuse is a crime against not only the child himself, but his family, his community and society in general. Rather than take a political stand Sunday night, you could do a world of good by addressing these issues. I thank you and wish you luck at the Oscars.

And all the newspeople said he didn't make any "political comments."

I don't know whether to be heartened or insulted by this glaring omission. That it wasn't rebutted because people agreed, or it was ignored because people were "avoiding the subject" again?

I prefer to think it's the former.

I may have to get over my issues for a day and see this movie. It can't be any worse than the abuse, and seeing people treat it sympathetically, well, it may help.

I was also very moved by his comments last nite. Finally someone with a large voice spoke out about abuse victims. I thought it was the best moment of the Oscars.

i did watch the entire show (billy crystal fan :) ). i was surprised at the statement he made regarding it and think he handled extremely well. it is probably unrealistic to expect him to become an immediate advocate, but tim robbins is a major player in hollywood and the message he sent out, though overwhelmed by the lord of the rings sweep, was heard. there is only so much time for the sound bytes of graqtitude and the fact that he said what he did will have an impact. it was lotr's night, and well deserved artistically speaking, but his comment will have an impact, as will the movie. it helps to know that this movie also scored the top male actor award. it is not over yet. take care, all.

That was a nice statement that he made, I wish I could have heard it, but that would of meant watching the Oscars.

When I was talking to the editor of my newspaper this afternoon, he knew nothing of it.

We've always tried to get a celeb to come to the biennial conf. I think Tim Robbins might be someone we would want to get at the next conf.

We had Tom Arnold about 6 yrs ago (he came with Roseanne but she didn't say anything).

Tim Robbins didn't have to say anything about sexual abuse. He and Susan Sarandon (who graduated from my high school two years before me... I didn't know her then when whe was Susan Tomlinson but I have the yearbook from Edison High in NJ) are pretty political and Tim could have said something about Iraq or the political campaign. But he didn't and put in a plug for sexual abuse.

So, let's work on this. If anyone has any contacts, let's work them.

read his quote in the san antonio express news- paper, thought it was great what he said...read it twice..no 3xs' now.

I didn't see the oscars last night but I saw his speech on Today this morring and it moved me to tears. To see someone say that on national news program gave me such hope that we will be heard.

Then tonight on Jay Leno Jay was talking to the movie reviewers and they also talked about Tim's statement. They all said that they where moved by his words. Tom

So then, why doesn't everyone take a minute and leave a comment for Mr. Robbins at www.tim-robbins.com This is a website that a fan of Mr. Robbins has apparently put up. My understanding is that there is no official Tim Robbins site but who knows, maybe he or his management actually does go there to read the messages.

:)
I too saw the broadcast, as did my husband (we also saw the film).

At a time when we are just beginning to address his recovery, this was a welcome gesture from such a vocal figure.

I have some contacts in H'Wood. I will begin working them immediately to put MSOrg in contact with Tim Robbins and his reps as soon as possible. I can assure you that the Tim-Robbins site does not appear to be officially Tim Robbins at all.

Please sit tight... this could take a couple of weeks.

Warm regards to all

I did not see it as it occurred, but saw it later on tape. I think it was very good of him to have incorporated that statement into his speech. He is known for being very political, and yet, this is what he chose to speak of. I am grateful he did that.
