The Others shocked me when I saw it first many months ago, but we bought it on DVD recently. I still haven't watched it fully through again yet. Here's what I did.
I knew the ending, and I won't give it away, but I jumped to the end to see it again. It screamed to me of denial. THIS is what this movie was about. It, like The Sixth Sense and some others, got me in the end. Reality check.
