I just saw this film on DVD. It was done in 2000. Actor John Tuturro (from "O Brother Where Art Thou") played the main character. For some reason I can really associate with films like these which have adults as main characters, who don't quite fit into the social norm. It sometimes feels like me in these movies. The main character had an unstable childhood, who was at least emotionally abused and who knows what else that went on which was unspoken.

The main character as an adult had serious social interaction issues and it seemed like that was a coping mechanism for his crappy childhood. The film reminded me somewhat of the movie "Shine" which was about a world famous pianist, who had severe social interaction issues as a result of his childhood abuse. "The Luzhin Defence" main character became a world famous Chessmaster. Sadly, he had people who would constantly take advantage of him due to his "issues" which eventually destroyed him. The ending was quite sad. Still I would recommend it. It was actually quite moving.
