"The Last Samurai" - a metaphor

Saw "The Last Samurai" this weekend. It was a very disturbing look into the mind of a man who survived horrible things and did horrible things (the main U.S. character was a man who worked in the Army and participated in raid on civilian Native American villages). The movie was violent and very hard to look at. Not for everyone.
But it also showed me a man who survived horrible things and was transformed into a being willing to learn from the past, fight for his beliefs, and perhaps die for a principle.
Inspiring for me.
Peace and love,
Scot
