The Day's Music

I always liked them. The name is a reference from a Monty Python skit, but I'm guessing you already knew that.

Today's sound is:

You cannot go against nature
Because when you do
Go against nature
It's part of nature too

Our little lives get complicated
It's a simple thing
Simple as a flower
And that's a complicated thing

No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell

My world is your world
People like to hear their names
I'm no exception
Please call my name
Call my name

No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell

No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell

When you're down
It's a long way up
When you're up
It's a long way down

It's all the same thing, no new tale to tell

Today (June 25, 2015) seems more like:

1997

Commit an act of memory
Knuckle down or buckle under
Sing part of the scream, believe
Cut it down to minimize the drama
Another break in the pattern
Another fight for the flashlight
Tick tock on a broken clock
I'll be headed for midnight

Insinuation really makes it happen
And your opinion is a nice surprise

Tongue tied get dignified
Open my pride find a map inside
Find a break in the pattern
Take your time to relax
Commit this act to memory
Sing part of the scream, believe
Knuckle down don't buckle under
Cut it down to minimize the drama

Insinuation really makes it happen
And your opinion is a nice surprise
But you're early for the Armageddon
If all we know and ever memorize
Lives on

This battle magnified
Perfect sized
There's no problem
Offer you a ride
But the engine died
Another break in the pattern

Insinuation really makes it happen
And your opinion opened up my eyes
It kept me itchin' with the contradiction
That all we know and ever memorize
Lives on...

This is now:

Doctor, my eyes have seen the years
And the slow parade of fears without crying
Now I want to understand

I have done all that I could
To see the evil and the good without hiding
You must help me if you can

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what is wrong
Was I unwise to leave them open for so long?

'Cause I have wandered through this world
And as each moment has unfurled
I've been waiting to awaken from these dreams
People go just where they will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

Doctor, my eyes
Tell me what you see
I hear their cries
Just say if it's too late for me

Doctor, my eyes
Cannot see the sky
Is this the prize for having learned how not to cry?

Jackson Brown sang Boulevard to me when I was literally on Hollywood Boulevard. I learned my share of hard lessons on the boulevard but was fortunately never trafficked. Came close through urgings of a friend, but never coerced and glad I had both the option of - and wisdom to - saying no thanks. Still, I was a bit of a street rat. The line that really resonated was

The kids're in shock up and down the block
While folks at home are playing beat the clock....

It made me understand how disconnected my world had become from my parents, from home, from everything. I was in a bit of shock there - but even more so at home where the abuse was happening under their noses and they never knew. Their everyday routine couldn't come close to knowing my everyday abuse - my shock.

Anyways, JB helped me frame my life in a different perspective and told me to hang tough - better days were ahead...

Today: A recollectionthe hot summer of 1987. I was a newly-minted fifteen year-old kid.

Out where the river broke
The blood wood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty five degrees

The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share

The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?

The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent, now
To pay our share

Four wheels scare the cockatoos
From Kintore East to Yuendemu
The western desert lives and breathes
At forty five degrees

The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share

The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
Let's give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?
How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?

The time has come
To say fair's fair
To pay the rent, now
To pay our share

The time has come
A fact's a fact
It belongs to them
We're gonna give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our beds are burning?

A sad week and appropriate music.

Come rolling into town
Unaware of the power that you have over me
And what am I to do with, 'Hello, how are you'?
Nothing's ever said that should be

And I don't care about you
If you don't care about me
We can go our separate ways
If you want to

The ties of love are strong
But they can be undone
And we'll go our separate ways
If you want to

I'm turning into me, not you
I can change my mind not my blood
And not all who love are blind
Some of us are just too kind
We forgive too much and never speak our minds

And I don't care about you
If you don't care about me
We can go our separate ways
If you want to

The ties of love are strong
But they can be undone
And we'll go our separate ways
If you want to

I'm giving up on you
And I'll turn my heart to something new
And we'll go our separate ways
If you want to

I stood out in the rain, holding my breath
Waiting for you, you never came
You broke my heart, you broke my heart
I know who's to blame, you're to blame

And I don't care about you
If you don't care about me
We can go our separate ways
If you want to

The ties of love are strong
But they can be undone
And we'll go our separate ways
If you want to

This song is by a North Carolina-based band called The Connells. It is of my favorite bands from back in high school. This song is off of the 1987 album "Boylan Heights." Barely two years earlier, I experienced csa at summer camp as my parents moved us to California. When this song same out, I was at boarding school, dealing with it all on some level.

He's home and for the
First time ever
He walked alone
In a world he'd once known

He's home, just might be
For the better
He'll seem alone
In a world he'd once known

They cheer to what you say
And it could be something
Then they steer so far away
They're missing nothing

It reeks of common sense
And it could be something
To live in elegance
As the story goes

Go home, just might be
For the better
You'll seem alone
In a world you'd once known

The Alan Parsons Project "Games People Play"
I'm really not a huge Prog-rock or progressive rock fan, but this one hits home today. I was eight years old when it came out sometime around Christmas of that year.

Where do we go from here now that all other children are growin' up?
And how do we spend our lives if there's no one to lend us a hand?

I don't wanna live here no more, I don't wanna stay
Ain't gonna spend the rest of my life, Quietly fading away

Games people play, You take it or you leave it
Things that they say, Honor Bright
If I promise you the Moon and the Stars, Would you believe it?
Games people play in the middle of the night

Where do we go from here now that all of the children have grown up?
And how do we spend our lives knowin' nobody gives us a damn

I don't wanna live here no more, I don't wanna stay
Ain't gonna spend the rest of my life, Quietly fading away

Games people play, You take it or you leave it
Things that they say, Just don't make it right
If I'm telling you the truth right now, Do you believe it?
Games people play in the middle of the night

Games people play, You take it or you leave it
Things that they say, Honor Bright
If I promise you the Moon and the Stars, Would you believe it?
Games people play in the middle of the night

Games people play, You take it or you leave it
Things that they say, Just don't make it right
If I'm telling you the truth right now, Do you believe it?
Games people play in the middle of the night

Airport Song

Glad you made it
Welcome to the farm
Who's your daddy?
I'm your daddy now
I'm here seeking only what I need
In your mind is where I'll plant my seed
It's for sure

Let me keep you in this place
You'll be better off this way
I will keep you warm and safe
You'll be better off this way
Learn to love the price you pay
Trust me dear you're better off this way

Put to bed the son and sister moon
I'll be hiding in your dirty room
I'll go there seeking only what I need
La ti da will stay there till we bleed
It's for sure

Let me keep you in this place
You'll be better off this way
I will keep you warm and safe
You'll be better off this way
I will not wake you from your sleep
Leave you wandering counting sheep
No more sad and sunshine days
Trust me dear you're better off this way

You'll be selling books at the airport...

Last night felt just felt like this. I remember many times I just simply got in the car and drove through the city at night hoping to clear my mind. Disregard the fact this song was used in "Boogie Nights." Or not. Despite this video intro, the song came out in 1979. It was a shot across Disco's bow. Thankfully. In full disclosure, I was still only 7 when the song came out.

Matthew Sweet "Devil with the Green Eyes" (1993)
[video:youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6-yJh9bIbs[/video]

This came out mid-summer in 1993. I was in the middle of college attending the summer term. Life was generally good, if not great at this point. Still, there was a dark hand on my shoulder-a remnant of a summer eight years prior...

I can understand you're living in a prison
I know you can only see me as a vision
I might fade away with the coming of a new dawn

And your heart is breaking.
What are you gonna do now
That you're tired of faking it?
Well, it's hard to take it
When you know what happens each time

The devil with the green eyes
Said you were never meant to be mine
'Cause I came up from a dark world
And every love I've ever known is dead

If you come close enough to see I am inhuman
I will tell you why you're feeling so uncertain
Every word I say has a way of turning evil in you
And your heart is breaking.

What are you gonna do now
That you're tired of faking it?
Well, it's hard to take it
When you know what happens each time

My wife shared this with me last year via text as I left home on a business trip. I think she meant it as a love letter to me. It's mournful and incredibly affirming.

"Tortured Boy"
Axis Mundi (2015)

I dont want to bathe
I'm afraid Ill lose your smell
I dont want to sleep
In case you have to go
Oh my tortured boy
All I want is you
For this waiting to be through
You you are driving your car far far away away away
Until it all comes clear
You wipe away your tears
Ill be standing right here
Youll have nothing more to fear
Oh my tortured boy
Oh my tortured boy
You dont have to hurt yourself
For the evils in your past
You dont have to ask a god
Wither you are good or bad
Because I love you
And I know your love is true
Your hurtful days are through
I dont want to bathe
Im afraid Ill lose your smell
I dont want to sleep
In case you have to go
Oh my tortured boy
Oh my tortured boy
