Spanking The Monkey (?title)
It was billed something like a "hilarious comedy" by The Rolling Stone. The subject is mother son incest. This is a very disturbing film. From the opening scenes I felt like I was going to suffocate just listening to the dialogue. As soon as I heard this dialogue I could hear this young male character being set up for blame in insane circumstances. I can't imagine how this film was perceived as funny. I felt my trauma as I watched it. All I can say is that it is such a disturbing topic that the reviewer panned it as a comedy as part of his own defenses against his own deep shadows. not a film for the beginning of recovery. even later I would suggest making plans to process the material after viewing it. I would not suggest it as part of a recovery program. My interest in the film was as insight into how the subject of male as victim is depicted in the media. The media historically has shown male victims of mother son sexual abuse in highly romantic scenes including such devices as soft focus lenses.
