from my earliest memories to last night...
these guys can still make me laugh out loud.
when i watch the stooges i forget about everything.

this always makes me feel a strange secret guilt,
because somewhere along the line, as a child, i started to realize that i was laughing at abuse and accidents.
i was still in preschool...
i had just burned myself seriously on a stove and i was bandaged... i will remember this moment forever... watching black and white tv... in pain... laughing at a guy getting knocked onto a hot stove... suddenly i realized that this was not funny... i became very concerned for the man as they cut to a closeup of his butt smoking on the grill... i wanted to shout a warning... i could envision the flesh being damaged exactly like mine was at that time... as he jumped up and ran across the room in panic with his pants on fire i could not see the comedy... this was not funny... i had just had my first brush with the mysterious experience of empathy... it was not comfortable... i had just been introduced to my other half... my better half... my conscience... it has been a battle ever since... between empathy and schadenfreude.

SCHADENFREUDE: a feeling of enjoyment that comes from seeing or hearing about the troubles of other people

[quote: Sigmund Freud ][font:Courier New]That, in many cases, which we perceive as " comical " and which we cannot explain, the child laughs out of pure pleasure, whereas the child's motives are clear and assignable. If, for instance, someone slips on the street and falls, we laugh, because this impression we know not why is comical. The child laughs in the same case out of a feeling of superiority or out of joy over the calamity of others. It amounts to saying: "You fell, but I did not." Certain pleasure motives of the child seems to be lost for us grown-ups, but as a substitute for these
we perceive under the same conditions the "comic" feeling.

what can i say... i find it a fascinating subject.

assuming that slapstick comedy is a healthy sublimation of this human attribute, and you're into that sort of thing, as i am, i thought i would start this thread in honour of silly kid stuff that still makes me laugh. kind of a memory lane with a survivor self-psycho-analytical twist.

now let's get back to the burning butts!
