I am outraged that this idiotic senator is mixing incest with homosexuality - equating love between two consenting adults with abuse of power, authority and love.

In order to avoid any "taken out of context" pretext, here is a link to his exact words:
Exerpts from the interview - not taken out of context! :p

Something has to be done to get this man out of power. Neaderthal mentality has no place in today's world. Our global society is far too pluralistic for intolerant homophobic imbeciles to be in any position to decide what is "normal".

I am a gay male survivor of incest. My perpetrator was my older brother, he was 14 and I was 8. I am in therapy for this now and am working hard to put my past behind me and to move on with a healthy and happy gay relationship.

I have discovered that my homosexuality was already surfacing before my abuse - that I was a "pretty boy" seems to be what made me an obvious target for perpetrators (I was raped when I was 15 by a stranger). I have been "out" as a gay male since I was 17 years old and never equated my homosexuality with my abuse. It was confusing to try and separate the two things and if it is that difficult for me, imagine what Sanatorium's statements do to add to confusion:

"...if the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery."

How can consensual sex be the same as incest? This is outrageous!

I just needed to vent here, guys. This sort of mentality is what enables the SHAME to have a hold on our lives. I will NOT feel ashamed for being gay. I will NOT allow my incest to have a grip on me for a lifetime. I will NOT confuse my being gay with abuse. I will put this all behind me and when I do, I will offer a helping hand to others in need.

Thanks for being here!

I was not happy when I heard this either and his apology or attempt at what I have seen is very inadequate. It isn't even close to an apology in my opinion, just a way to cover his butt. Very sad when people like him are so narrow minded.

Hanginon You said it all here brother. You are no longer existing through life you are healing.
Big difference

Now you gotta remember that most Politicans address coments to the masses from which they are elected. It is not a direct assault on gayness more another example of pliticians who suffer from a total lack of humanity and intelligence.
They do not think! They react! And in a way that gets them the most attention.

We here are all victims of SA; some gay, some straight and some who really dont know their orientation. The key to it all is politicians and Institutions just dont get it when it comes to SA.
IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY AND INFLUENCE. You know just once I would like to here someone from those groups who would just stand up and say. GOD I AM SORRY HOW CAN I HELP YOU HEAL.

Brother Wolf I think that if we howl as a group gay straight or inbetween someplace they might finally get the GD message.

Your brother Mike

Hello Mike from Canada. Your post is VERY, VERY WELL SAID. For the past few years I have spoken out at public forums at Vandrebilt University, do I make a message to the both male and female listiners, or for the matter, the other abuse suvivor listeners. I do not know, but that hasen't stopped me from speaking out. Bosishere :) :)

I posted this at the unmoderated forum, but here's an excerpt of a letter written to Senator Santorum recently that may prove interesting regarding the Christianity and homosexuality question...
________________________________________________

Dear Mr. Santorum:

Sorry to bother you, but I have been following your name in the news of late regarding family values. While as a Christian (and Catholic at that) I applaud your concern for the family, I believe that your attack on homosexuals (or homosexual acts as you call them) is somewhat misguided and based on generalizations. I happen to be interested in this whole topic and have spoken to a slew of other professionals (psychologists) and religious leaders (from various churches) about this.

Now, while I do not know your specific religious upbringing, I believe your clarification of being against homosexual acts not homosexuals echoes that of the Roman Catholic Church. However, after speaking to a nun and priest of their more liberal views (and that of a very well-respected religious professor), I have concluded that the Bible is not at all clear in its condemnation of homosexual acts that are truly treated as that of heterosexuals (i.e. those that defy the typical stereotypes). You must remember that historically people have used the Bible and religious doctrine to make interracial marriages or even the rights of women or equal rights for other races banned--ONLY to retract and apologize for them later. Furthermore, the Catholic Church's Catechism says clearly in its writing that if one truly and honestly disagrees with church doctrine and has prayed for it, one is obligated to follow one's conscience as guided by the Holy Spirit.

I guess what I am trying to say are 3 things: 1) the religious debate is raging about this and I think if you are truly concerned about it from that point, then please talk to religious scholars of various churches, 2) if one is really concerned about the "choice" aspects of homosexuality, then the scientific community should then be funded to do additional studies to determine its basis [preliminary results in animals suggests that there are definite differences in brain structure and hormones meaning it is NOT a choice...and seriously, who would choose it considering the prejudice that exists out there], and 3) if one is truly concerned of the family, then one must remember that families have and will continue to be broken if homosexuals are forced to get married via only 1 route (especially if science is correct in that homosexuals can not change any more than a heterosexual can).

Anyway, please reconsider your statement or please pray for guidance to find the truth BEYOND the doctrine on this matter. Thank you sir for your time.

Sorry, guys, but I have concerns about trying to find a REASON for homosexuality - scientific or otherwise. Anything other than just acceptance that homosexuality exists is pejorative and makes being gay a "problem" or "bad" and I won't accept that.

When we bring religion into it, things get very convoluted. My parents taught me that God does NOT discriminate and loves each of us for who we are. I believe in this kind of love and aspire to be capable of loving that selflessly.

Religion or not, gay people exist and will always exist. The sooner we all accept that and embrace the diversity of perspectives, the healthier we ALL will be - gay or straight. How many guys on here struggle with whether or not they are gay? In an ideal world, it wouldn't matter.

In my life, I have tried to focus on HOW to be gay, not WHY I am gay. Why? What difference does it make? I AM who I am and I love myself, most of all because I accept my homosexuality and am not afraid to tell anyone who I am.

This is the only way we can change people from thinking that being gay is "wrong" or "bad" - if we embrace our sexuality. As long as no one is being abused or hurt, and there are two consenting ADULTS, whose business is it what I do with whom?

Certainly NOT a senator in Washington, D.C. They (politicians) have proven time and again that their public policies are not the same standard to which they hold themselves.

It will be interesting to see what the conclusion of this episode will be. Trent Lott lost his leadership position because of his bigot beliefs and statements against african americans. But i'd be willing to bet that this senator will not loose his leadership position because there has not been the outrage exhibited. What he said was far more ignorant than what Lott expounded, but we have to remember that racism is a widely held and accepted belief. Whereas gay-bashing or sexual abuse bashing is much more acceptable in the public's view.

ABCD....i think your letter was excellent. Just hope it is actually read. You might even receive a form letter response if his assistants deem this to be problematic. But i would not hold my breath. I've heard other racist, bigoted, homophobic comments from this senator with no consequences so i'd be surprised to see him held accountable now........

Thank you for saying this.. I needed this right now....

It was interesting to me how quickly this disapered from the news. Sort of a double standerd. Wile we are still hereing some comintary on trent lot. Enen some newspapers in the area I live in were praising Santurm for his comments. I thought this was warped. this guy should be forced out of offic.

Well Jonathan as a fellow Pennhead and registered to vote, I cant wait to vote for somebody besides him. Here in Pissburgh the paper has been non stop in its letters to the editor section with people weighing in on their two cents.
It breaks down to mostly two arguments.
1) he is a careless thoughtless bigot.
I concur.
2) we are all against him because he spoke his mind and has a right to free speech.
I agree he has the right to free speech, but as a senator he must hold himself to a higher standard.
This issue is not going away in this part of Pa.
and I am going to actively assist in his getting booted out of there.
