I have heard the term repetition compulsion to describe survivor's behavior when he recreates abusive situations over and over. I'm struggling with this and wondering what are some of the ways people work through this issue? One approach I heard (in a film called Downpour Resurfacing) is continuing to repeat the compulsive behavior, but developing a mindfulness about it until coming to the realization that there's nothing to be scared of and that the survivor really is a vital and loved part of the universe.... But I really want to stop the compulsion, acting out etc. (doing better with this actually)... and was wondering what are the ways to come out of the compulsion. Any thoughts? thanks!

Hi and welcome to the site, hope you feel at home here, its a great resource. Here is a link to an article on the site that I found helpful.

For me talking about the compulsive behaviour in therapy and gaining an understanding of why I was doing it helped me to do stop it.

Welcome again,
Peter.

Beau,

I'm glad you posted and I hope Ken's article helps you. If you still have questions don't hesitate to ask.

Much love,
Larry
