I am a survivor of rape. My question has to do with my career choice. I am a nursing student. I plan on becoming a Forensic Nurse and eventually working with male sexual assault victims. As you well know, the information and resources are limited. Any information anyone can share? I plan on remaining in IL after nursing school...

First, welcome here. I think it is very honorable that you are going to take what has occurred and turn it into something positive, (although I do not know what Forensic nurse is, having only one friend who is a nurse) I am not sure of what information you are seeking. If it is just about male survivors in general, check some of the other pages of this site, there is a lot of resources and articles available to you. If you have specific questions, any of the moderators or Ken Singer can be very good sources of information. I wish you good luck, and welcome you again.

Forensic nursing is a relatively new nursing discipine. It involves the cooperation of nursing methods with criminology and forensic science.

For example, if I do this, I could work at hospital and collect evidence from rape victims, gunshot wounds, etc. Another facet is investigational. For example, forensic nurses are trained to spot domestic battery, child abuse, etc.

I can also be trained to do death investigations, crime scenes and such. Or I can go into the psycosocial aspect of criminology working with offenders in corrections, or working with the victim.

Ultimately, I hope to bring the issue of male rape to the forfront and ensure that adequate help is provided in my area. As this is new to me as well, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or feedback...

Male Rape Issues in the State of Georgia. The Law on Rape says that rape is between a man and a woman and must have vaginal penatration.
Seems to me the first thing we need to see is the laws changed. Just a thought.

I agree that the laws need changed. Many states are working on this issue. Foremost, however, we have to keep informing the public about this issue. The more we make our voices heard, the stronger we are.
