Put up a tent in the back yard, WHY NOT?

I purchased a 10' x 10' tent put it on a raised platform and set it up in the back yard-Why? -To get out of this rut. I have outfitted it with a cot, and an outdoor lounge chair a couple of hanging lamps and wa-la a Mash unit. My friends chuckle (I think they are just jealeous). However One has said he might join me in the adventure for a night. Even my pastor came by and and had a snicker or two.
:p

I have been in a rut for about a year and need to do some crazy way off things to get out of it. My plan is to use this as a summer retreat away from my room, which can be depressing at times. There are times I will walk into my bedroom and feel like there is a dark cloud over it.

I will not clutter up my new found retreat, and will keep it in order. This will be a place for me to reflect on the better things of life, and where I want to go, so as not to caught up in what I am going through in recovery.

I am about to embark in my first night in the wild (Southern Califonia) under the stars (Street Lights), and am looking forward to it.

If anybody has any other suggestions (crazy or not) to get out of ruts-Please let me know!!! :)

Hey Daniel !

What a cool idea man !!
Keep going with it... (I recon everyone else really is jelous !!)

I read this book called "artists way" its a self-help book about recoving (or discovering) your artistic talents..
It has some idea's that I tried out..

One was just to start saying "no"
I used to be a shy, give in sorta person.. I never wanted to be a problem so I'd always say "yes" automatically... whether I wanted to do what people were asking or not..
It was so freeing to finally have to confidence to just say "no" automatically..
(and then to go back later and say "yes" and actually really mean it !)

Another one was to do exactly what you feel like doing at that exact moment..
I've always been taught that feeling were bad... but they're not.. they're just feelings..
So one night I really wanted to see an old friend... but he lives so far away.. and it was late... but I thought "No, I'm really going to do it.."
So I drove the 45min to his place, and knocked on the door... he was surprised to see me... but glad... I joined in a board game with him and his girlfriend.. and stayed over the night talking and chatting till late..

It was great... I suggest people try them..

Matt :)

GO FOR IT DANIEL!!!
THAT TAKES GUTS TO DO WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND IT'S GREAT! I WISH I COULD DO IMPULSIVE THINGS, BUT I JUST CAN'T WITH THE WIFE NOT KNOWING ABOUT ME. SOMETIMES I WISH I COULD JUST HOLD ONTO A DREAM AND THEN DO IT.

YOUR "GET-A-WAY" SOUNDS PERFECT! MORE POWER TO YOU. JUST REMEMBER ONE THING, "DON'T USE YOUR NEW HOME TO ESCAPE, BUT INSTEAD TRY TO USE IT FOR A REWARD AND ENLIGHTENMENT.

DON'T LET THAT DARK CLOUD INTO YOUR TENT OR YOUR MIND FOR THAT MATTER. JUST THINK OF YOUR MIND IS ALSO THAT TENT! "NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER"....(SORRY FOR THAT QUOTE)

KEEP UP THE "GOOD WORD" THATS RIGHT "THE GOOD WORD"

PEACE TO YOU THIS NIGHT..SCOT

Daniel,

living in the wilds of southern calif myself i know the dangers you face doing what your doing, hehehe, dude, i like this idea of yours!!

I dont have any earthshattering ideas for getting out of a rut for you, the only thing i could think of is sometiems when i am feeling that way i get my camera out and go hiking and take a lot of pictures, when i have the camera i seem to pay a lot more attention to what is going on around me.

Best of luck to you with the tenting.

John

Well I did it-The first night was great. I recieved a wonderful night sleep until the outside sprinkler system came on, No I did not set the tent on the grass where it would get wet, however the noise of the sprinkler hitting the bushes at 5:30 AM was quite a surprise. It is amazing What you don't hear when the windows are closed and the walls insulated-Ah no walls and insulation on this adventure!

I will brave the wild of Southern California again tonight, however I have already changed the timer on the sprinkler to come on at 7:00-who needs an alarm clock! :D

Matt, Thank you for the "no" Idea, Will I use it NO-oh I mean YES

Scott, No escaping here (I hope), tired of the bull, Moving on!!! Step by Step Or Maybe Tent by Tent.

John, I have picked up on hiking about 4 months or so ago, I go out every weekend, getting ready to climb Mt. Whitney in August with a couple of buddies. Do you Hike often?

I sure do appreciate the suggestions-Please keep them coming!!! :)

Hey - scrolling around - do do like the idea of the tent. I know this post is a long time ago so you may be gone by now from the site - I struggle sometimes to do just what I want to do because doing what I want to do can’t possibly be OK.

Love this idea and the resurrection of it! Jealous of the original poster and recent finder.

Awesome idea, Daniel. Thanks for the share.

Cheers,
Tom
