Prostate Cancer

Prostate Cancer
Yesterday I had my appointment with the Oncologist - he says I do not need radiation at this time because when they did the prostate biopsy after it was removed that it had clean margins so they are fairly sure that the cancer did not escape the prostate - I will have a psa test done at 3 months post prostatectomy and so long as it is a zero I will not have to do radiation - ductal adenocarcinoma is fairly rare (less than 1% of all prostate cancers) and is a type that is generaly known to have a far higher chance of metastatic spread to unusual sites - and is of a type that is known for worse survival rates - which I know all of that sounds pretty bad - but...

To not have to do radiation - for them to think that they got it all out early enough - that is huge news to me - of course there will still be close monitoring for many years to come - but the news at the moment is very good - and I'll take good right now :)

Thanks Guys

Today was the 1st meeting with the pelvic floor physical therapist - she gave me a few worksheets with excercises on them that I'm supposed to work on for the next 3 weeks - Kegel excercises - which I've already been doing - she was a bit suprised by my complete incontinence - she thinks it's probably from the nerves they took out (which may - or may not - grow back in time - maybe years) - diapers 24/7 till then...

I got a message late Friday night that floored me - it was from my brother - come to find out that for the past 2 weeks my brother has been fighting matastatic prostate cancer that has spread to his brain causing him to have continual migrain headaches, double vision, and nosebleeds - he is working with a radiation oncologist and chemical oncologist - but he's so early into the fight that they have not been able to tell him anything about their course of treatment yet

My brother and I don't talk often - I can count the number of times we've talked in the past 30 years on 1 hand - but we talked for over 3 hours last night

@TJ jeff, I’m so sorry for the discovery of your brother’s cancer. I’m lost for words to help make this better. I want to focus on a positive,
that you and him made a connection last night. I hope that this can lead to support for each other.
Unfortunately genetics can plays a big role in prostate cancer. My father had it, then me and now I worry for my two boys.
Life can throw so much at us sometimes.
I’m sending positive thoughts and energy your way, as you both continue your fight
and healing of this horrible disease.
Take care!

Glad you and your brother reconnected. Sad it had to be over all this.

@TJ jeff - I’m sorry I am just now reading this. I read through all your updates. I’m glad for the good report and that you are past surgery. I hope your recovery is going better… bit by bit…. Hopefully you will recover some or all of your nerve and muscle function! It’s a hard road.

I haven't traveled this path but in 2006 I had my colon removed due to Ulcerative Colitis. I only tell you that to say that I lived with an ileostomy for 8 months. And while not fun, it was good to know people can live a good life with an ostomy. I hope you don’t have to go that road. If you do, don’t hesitate to drop a not. Ileostomies and urostomies are different but same overall experience.

Thanks guys,

I just got a call from my nephew last night - my brother is back in the hospital - in the ICU - he was having trouble walking, eating, seeing double, terrible nose bleeds, coughing up blood - the doctors say his body systems are starting to shut down on him - they were going to do another CT scan on him at 10PM and compare it to the one they did about 4 weeks ago to see just how fast this cancer is spreading - they say it is neuroendocrine differentiated cancer (research I did last night says that this can come from a ductal andeocarcinoma - which is the exact same thing in my prostate - but what doesn't make sense is that they are saying that there is no tumor to be found in his prostate?) - they were going to start him on high dose chemo - but they are unsure of whether his body can handle that - and yet without it he probably won't last a month

Thought I'd better give an update on my brother - He is suprising the doctors greatly - they started him on high dose chemo on Wednesday - last bach was Friday night - he has had an amazing recovery - they moved him out of the ICU and into a private room this morning - he might even go home Monday
