Overactive Cowper's

I have a rather interesting/alarming thing occurring. It isnt truly a problem I suppose, but there is some embarrassment that goes along with this. My Bulbourethral (Cowpers) gland has become very active. Every time I sit for a while, when I stand I have a sizable wet spot on my pants. Ive always been a secreter when Im aroused, but now its nearly constant. Is this something I should talk to my doc about? One thing I read says that secreters on average have healthy prostates. I guess that could be a bonus. The only changes Ive made recently are in my meds. Ive cut the SSRIs in half (Citalopram 40mg down to 20mg and Bupropion 300mg down to 150mg) Could this cause it? My libido hasnt changed (basically non-existant) although the urge to masturbate has risen. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

Although it can be embarrassing a wet spot is ok to have. A call to your Dr maybe in order to check if this is a side affect.

Otherwise it is ok, I think.

just wanted to let you know that you are'nt alone in this problem...

for me - it's been something that comes and goes without rhyme or reason since my early teens (and I'm 38 now)

yes - it can be an embarrassing problem at times - the 1 doc I talked with it about was basicaly puzzled by it and was of no help at all other than to say that he did'nt think that there was anything wrong with it - just "overactive"

As Shakespeare said: "...out damned spot..." (I know its taken out of context).

What an intriguing question. It's difficult to answer, but I'll give it a whirl.

Activation of the Cowper's gland (or bulbourethral gland) is part of a dynamic feedback loop involved in sexual stimulation and fulfillment. It can be stimulated by visual cues and also by physical feedback such as stimulation of the penis. In other words, it has nerve connections to the central nervous system which are supposed to be involved in activating it. Yet, it is supposed to be quiescent when we are not aroused, but ready to become active when the feedback loop is activated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulbourethral_gland

First it must be asked: Are you absolutely sure that the Cowper's is the one that is misbehaving? I don't mean to embarrass you, but is it possible that damage to your urinary system during severe abuse has led to leakage of the urinary system? In other words, is it the slimy Cowper's secretion or is it urine that's leaking out? Or is there an infection involved here? What is the color of the leaking solution? Is it pus?

OK, if the answer to the above questions is that it is definitely Cowper's gland secretion, then why would it not assume its quiescent phase as it's supposed to? Assuming you are not partaking any of the drugs used in male stimulation now available on the market (viagra, etc.), then there is something going on with the feedback loop. So what would be activating the nervous system feedback loop? Is it DID? Is there a part of the nervous system which has been partitioned off and which is apparently not part of the usual system of activation? We know that DID has the power to act in this way. But is that what it is? Another question might be raised as to whether you sustained physical damage to that apparatus during the severe abuse you experienced. For instance, is there scar tissue exerting pressure on the nerve which is supposed to activate the system? And the last question is whether it's a body memory which is acting independently of the usual activating systems.

To get a better grasp of what's going on, try making mental notes as to whether the flow is always the same level or if it subsides at some times. This will give the best hint as to which if any of the 3 mechanisms I propose is being activated.

After thinking about this I think the scar tissue answer seems the most palpable explanation.

I don't know how that would apply to TJ.

Thanx for all of the info Allen

Shane - I hope that Allen's info can help you find the root cause of what's causing this

1 thing that can help to make the problem un-noticable is to take an adhesive backed maxi pad and cut it into a strip that you can stick into the pouch in your underwear - it'll absorb any leakage very well and can last for days depending upon leakage rates

in my case I'm guessing that it's a nerve thing - possibly somehow caused by possible nerve damage from the severve spankings that I got as a kid - I suppose that it's also possible that it could be some kind of subconsious nervous system feedback loop

The phenomenon of Cowper's gland secretion occurring upon whipping of the buttocks is not new. It was known as far back as Roman times and was observed when men were punished at the whipping post. There is a reference to this at the following location:

http://books.google.com/books?id=gRmlaF56UxEC&pg=PA15&lpg=PA15&dq=cowper%27s+gland+and+spanking&source=bl&ots=GeENtBRyAm&sig=d6tMIRcG7x6yXYzg8bgF62tHMVs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=IscdT9byGc-Xtweix82mCw&ved=0CDYQ6AEwBA#v=onepage&q=cowper%27s%20gland%20and%20spanking&f=false

I have severe sexual dysfunction and cannot orgasm easily. To avoid "wet dreams" I have my wife spank my buttocks pretty hard with a paddle about once a week while I hold paper towels on my penis to absorb the inevitable release of Cowper's gland output. This avoids waking up in the night with soaked underwear. The output is NOT urine. It is a very slippery natural sexual lubricant and can be very abundant.

I was looking online (Google) for solutions and this thread actually showed up in my search there, which is hilarous!! Going through major issues of this while going through my own trauma with my PTSD Therapy - walked out of my last session with a HUGE wet spot.

Also notice it when reading or discussing trauma here at MS (mine or other men's).

Grabbed a "pad" from our shared unisex restroom at work - going to see if that helps.

Next T session, though - I will bring a change of clothes!!

NC - I am sure that the pad will certainly help

what I have found over the years to be the best is Attends Guards for Men -they are thin (you can easily carry an extra in your pocket without anyone knowing) - they are cup shaped when opened so they really catch and hold till it's absorbed (I've noticed with some pads that it will run down between your legs if they don't absorb fast enough) - fit in normal underwear without being noticeable - they are less than $1.00 a day - and will hold all but the worst days of leakage

Update: pads have helped.

went on a different website that has both men and women abuse survivors. A woman posted there that she had similar issues with Vaginal lube during T sessions. I shared my story there as a reply. I thought it was interesting that men are not the only ones triggered in this way during T sessions.

Have you tried the Attends Guards? I really haven't found anything that works better at a cheaper price. I have found that it is best to wear underwear that has a defined cup shaped pouch though (like bikini briefs) - something the pad is not going to move around in.

I haven't been in T for a while now (but I do remember the very noticeable wet spot in my jeans at times) - I really do think that for me it goes back somehow to nerve damage done in childhood from the severe spankings - there are certain body positions that will make the leakage increase
