I am beginning to think it is harder on me to be a coach then a competitor!! Over last weekend, I had a junior student who competed at a rather large competition (and finished second, which I am SO proud of!!!) I have been working more with him this week, but also working with another student, a year older who competes as a senior, who has a competition THIS weekend. Starting today. In, hm, half hour, in fact!!!

It is so strange to me, perhaps just because I am still new at coaching. But to have two different students, different skill levels, to prepare them both for two different competitions (in two different countries, no less!) within a week, has been WILD to me! I mean, no two people do you relate with the same. No two people do you work with or motivate the same. It is a different training method with everyone, as all are individuals. But to have both of them having to prepare for such big challenges, so close together, I have been pulling my hair out! At least they are close in age (18 and 19), rather then one being 19 and the other being 10! I think that would be too much for me, to have to 'shift gears' so drastic as that!

Anyway, I was pacing around and really annoying my student who is competing this afternoon. Annoying your student, I am learning from this side of the process, is not a good thing! So, I found a 'pllugin' and got online for a while!

But, now is time to go! Hope all have a good day!

thank you Mike! My younger student, he had already finished a very wonderful second in his competition. This one, of course, being competitor, had to win his! It is nice to be a small part of their successes, and to know that they both are still at the beginning of their careers in this sport!

Great news Leosha. Being a coach is such an important role in their young careers. I bet that this next competition will be successful too.

Be sure that they know that their skating is a greqat gift, whether or not they win a medal--I know they want the medals--but the people who watch them skate are thrilled with those who do not win medals too.

Do you think you could take on a 67 year old student????

That would be a sight!

Leo,

You are, and will continue to be, a good coach. Speaking as an instructor though, I can tell you that "annoying" your students can be a positive for them. It can also be called "motivation."

I "annoy" my students daily, but never negatively. Always positively. They need to be challenged to be the best they can be. And they will be, as long as you keep them properly motivated.

Which, I think, is no problem for you, brother... :D

Peace and love,

Scot

Bob: I have a seven-year old student, 67 should be pretty similar! :D Although your center of gravity is a bit higher, and usually, in adults, the fear of falling is a bit more of a problem!

Scot: Well, 'annoying' him to motivate would not be a bad thing. But, pacing back and forth, back and forth in front of him, and finally he says 'Can't you just sit down?' Well, that was not so motivating! :D Just is me!
