There are some new website things that I hope everyone likes.

First of all there is a new page for memberships, renewals, and donations. You can join or renew memberships and even set up an automatic annual payment to renew.

You can donate to our various funds both one time as well as set up a monthly donation.

You can now use credit cards, debit cards, checking and savings accounts as well.

There is no amount too small...we set things up to accept donations of $1.00 and greater.

We also have our new bookstore online as well...You will notice not only books but everything else as well. We partner with Amazon.com so anything they have can be purchased through our site and we will receive from 4% to 8.5% of the purchase price of all shipped items.

I know there is continuing work on the chat room, behind the scenes work on the discussion board, and more going on as well....thanks to everyone for your support, patience and encouragement.

And any feedback on the changes is great...good things, ideas to improve, and especially if something does not work as it is supposed to...

all my best,

I was talking to a guy in the know about these Java chatrooms, and apparently they are totally unsafe in cyber World.

Java is yesterday, but it means running an 'applet' or program on your comp, and it is the hackers easy way of using a Trojan horse.

The other thing to mention, is that I cannot buy books through your website, as I live in Europe and will be taxed on import, so I have to go to Amazon UK to buy.

I dont suppose its such a big thing, but that is how it is,

Nope, tried to join using debit card, no can do. Not even an option to use a debit card.

To be honest, the "join MS" sections and "Dontations" are very un-user friendly and old fashioned.

Im a teacher and sorry BT your report card says "could do better"

Not everyone is in the USA, you need to be offering Maestro and cirrus debit card transactions for us europeans.

Why not get together with paypal? Makes it easier all round, if not them then there are enough similar services to allow people to join/donate.

I've researched web usage at post grad level and nothing is a bigger turn off for a user than a page that doesnt work or one thats not easy to use.

Japan and Reality...

I know the discussion board is on the list of things to do but I am not involved in that so im not sure how far out it is. I think after the chat room is where everyone is satisfied the discussion board is next, but im not sure of that. I have no clue as to the java stuff you refer to, but you might let nathan know and he may have some information or feedback...

As to the debit card I did check the menu and you are right there is not an option listed. I am not sure about international payments but in the USA a debit card is interchangeble with credit cards as to payment processing, so if someone chooses to pay by credit card and uses their debit card it should work fine. This would not be the case however if it is an atm card that does not go through the visa mastercard system, so there could be cases where a debit card that was not tied to visa mastercard would not work.

I will get the field changed to say credit/debit cards.

Our processer tells me that any card tied to visa mastercard should work regardless of geographic location. We do not have at this point the ability to do ach transactions from non us banks.

I understand paypal and verisign are popular systems and that is the system we have been using prior to this one. We chose to change because we were getting constant errors and many many complaints about the system not processing transactions. We tried to work with them but we simply got no where.

They were also unable to provide reports that identified what various transactions were for so a large part of work was tied to phone calls and emails asking people what the money they donated was intended for. We managed that as best we could by only allowing certain donation amounts for various things simply so we could tell what someone wanted done with their donation.

They did have a program to meet our needs but it would have cost us a very significant amount of money to upgrade to their program that would do this.

When we were looking for new processors we looked for the features they could provide and the cost. The new processor includes in their basic charge, which is less than we were paying paypal/verisign, features that we simply could not afford to buy from paypal/verisign.

The processer we have chosen is one of the largest in the world and the biggest thing we have now is a single contact person we can call for help and trouble shooting. In the past we were very dependent on email and call backs that could take days....

While we have certainly had problems since taking this live the response we have gotten to problems has been quite amazing and almost always included instant fixes. I am sure as with anything like this we will experience more problems and I do need to know about them, so everyone keep telling me of problems such as this and I will do my best to address them.

As to the page, it is what I consider a work in progress. I would appreciate specific suggestions for improvement. The goal was to consolidate several pages in several different formats that was all over the site into one uniform page that was quick, simple and easy to use.

I really would appreciate what you see as non user friendly and old fashioned and how you would improve it.

I will also check with our processer about Maestro, but I do know my own debit card is through cirrus and it is the one we used to do all of our live testing and it has always went right through. It is a visa debit card however, so are there non visa mastercard debit card's internationally?

As to the apearance of the page we simply at this point created to look like the rest of the site. There has been a decision made to work on the overal look of the site and "modernize" it. At present all the work is on function and how it looks is a ways down the road.

Remember we are doing this mostly with volonteer labor by people that work on this after they are done with their job, their family, their stuff so to speak...

We will probably never have a site like we could have if we had thousands of dollars to hire it done.

We also have an amazangly large site with over 300 seperate files and hundreds and hundreds of pages, links, resources, etc...

The work involved with even the most simple change can be overwhelming when you have 30 minutes here and 20 minutes there between jobs, dinner and little league to get something done.

I don't mean to come across negative or defensive in any form or fashion, I just want everyone to understand our limitations. I really reallly realllly do want your feedback, opinions, advice and options, but give me back ideas that include things that take cost, time, and all that into consideration. And a really good help is to point me to an actual web site that has function that you like, then we can check that out and see how it is done and what we could or couldn't do to make it work for us....

Sorry to go on and on....I tend to overexplain...lol

thanks so much for taking the time to post and please keep it coming...we really do need your feedback, advice and opinions to continue to improve out site...

thanks,
brent

Brent,

One aspect of the problem that you may not be getting is that for those of us in Europe, we often have - or even almost always have - debit cards that are issued by our banks and are not linked to Visa or Mastercard. I have these for my German and UK accounts, and they are all linked through Maestro, not Cirrus, with no connection to the big credit card firms.

I can use these cards to withdraw money out of any atm bearing the Mastro logo in the USA, and I find these everywhere. So I guess it ought to be possible to set something up so non-USA members can make transactions with Male Survivor.

This problem:

We do not have at this point the ability to do ach transactions from non us banks.
is one that affects many organizations like ours, which, as you say, don't have the moola to hand over for a lot of state-of-the-art features for their website. I have been involved in professional societies where the same issues have arisen. I am a certified idiot where the technology is concerned, so I can't speak to that. But I can say it was something we tried to address as a top priority. As a USA-based organization begins to take on a more international character it becomes more important to address the situation that affects members outside the USA.

Thanks for all the hard work. I would NOT want to be the person who has to work on a site of this complexity!

Much love,
Larry

Larry, thanks for the input...

I have found some limited information as to why this is a problem. It seems that outside the visa mastercard system there is not much uniformity in how to handle different currency and exhange rates.

What I have found so far is that some organizations etc...seem to have duplicate sites for different countries...at this point I have no idea if that is an answer, what it would entail etc...

I know we have often talked about investing in the programs that convert our site to other languages and such...

Frankly, I will put this on the list, but there is so much we need to do to get the site where we want it for US and english speaking users that all of this could be a while.

But if you want to do some research and help me figure out options to handle non US currency in other formats than visa mastercard as well as language issues, we will certainly examine the cost/feasability and see what can be done.

thanks a bunch
brent.

I have also found that there are still many debit or atm cards that are not tied to visa mastercard here in the US as well.

I was not aware of that, simply because since mine was I thought they were all that way now...lol...

So it seems the proper term is not "debit" card but "check" card.

At least that is what I have been told. A debit card or atm card does not go through the credit card system, but a check card with a visa or mastercard logo does and will work on our system as a credit card would.

However, we do now have ACH capability, so someone with only a atm or debit card should indicate they want to pay using their checking or savings account and then the system asks for the appropriate routing and account number, rather than a care number.

This does not address the international currency issues, but should work for US banking institutions.

thanks,
brent.

Brent,

I was not aware of that, simply because since mine was I thought they were all that way now...lol...
Thanks for this one - gave me a good laugh! But a laugh of recognition. I usually discover these little "details" only by hitting the proverbial wall at full speed. :) For example, arriving in a country and discovering that my wallet contains only useless plastic!

Much love,
Larry
