New Discussion Board?

What are your thoughts about using phpBB for our discussion board? You can learn more about phpBB here Our current BB software costs money to upgrade and for tech support if needed. phpBB has no costs.

This DB is a perl script meaning we cannot import any of the current posts and threads into phpBB. We would be starting all over again. We can and will provide this DB as an archive. This means you can still search and read all the posts, but not reply to any of them. This archive would be accessed from a link on the phpBB board.

Also, there is no guarantee that you could register your current nick on the new board. It's first come, first served.

Thanks.

I think it's a great idea, e-blah is also a very good perl script bbs, and the free tech support is very good.

I looked at the poll, but did not answer do to some confusion on the questions. Especially question 3. I don't know if yes means no or what. It starts with a negative statement and goes on from there.

Also, if you say yes to #1, can you say yes to #2, but that would be ambiguous, or would it.

I'm so confused.

So here's my opinion on the matter, without doing the poll.

I like the current board, but am not be opposed to changing it to this phpBB board or possibly another.

I just hope it's faster on dialup connections

Question three was totally confusing. I was going to just leave it unanswered but it wouldn't let me. So I have no idea what my answer meant on that one.

I feel if the organization can save money and do the same thing that is being done, by all means we need to do it. Either that or a lot of people need to donate a lot of money. It would be nice to have everything remain the same, but in the world of computers, that is often the exception, not the norm.

As long as the current stuff could be archived (if that is possible) than it helps alleviate some of the issues. And well, it would let everyone sign up again (where some might like to change their login names - this would now be an option). We might have to have an "index" at first just so we know who each other is...grin!

I say, go for it!

Don

Like Don, I'm all for the org saving money.

As long as these discussions are archived and available (as appropriate, considering the Members' area forums), then please do what we have to do.

Would we get some advance notice when the switch will happen? Or would that risk our own mini-Slashdot effect as everyone rushes for the best login names? :D

Thanks,

Joe

A mini /.

Good point. I'm thinking it will just happen some day in the future... If everyone supports using phpBB it will be a couple of weeks before this happens.

hmm...I suppose someone 'could' purchase there old nick in advance ;)

Malesurvivor Admin & All Members,

I am all for looking into another BB. provider however, please be aware that phpbb seems to have security issues especially with their search options, this issue i speak of can be looked up under Community-Announcements under this providers BB.

I see there are no fee's in association with the switch over from the current BB to Phpbb and from what it sounds like those members or non-members who malesurvivor wants to take issues with can be blocked thru varius means IE:email,IP address or other means. One thing I would take issue with is what is not being told to those here that using this BB all topics or individual topics can and might just disappear without malesurvivor being a part to topics disappearing due to flaws in PHPbb's software.Security is a big issue for all of us as survivors especially when it comes down to what we give out either in confidence or with our authorization which those hear will not be aware of if they read the fine print that all information such as IP Address,What is on a certain persons PC via Cookies and other electronic means to monitor the persons PC while on this board which could be used against the person if they are not made aware of these means of BIG BROTHER WATCHING OVER YOU when your not looking.

Financially speaking this would be a good move if malesurvivor can be made assured that the survivors using this board will be safe and that security will be the upmost of importance when the switch is made especially with holes in this boards software.

Topics could be made searchable along with the possibility of the person now using the same Userid/Username without having to pay again for the use of the Username unless malesurvivor is now going to charge to use certain names and allow those certain names to access certain areas of malesurvivors website which this PHPBB makes aware of this software if malesurvivor wants to block use to certain usernames or email addesses or IP addresses. The way i see it this may benefit Malesurvivor more then the actual members of malesurvivor with the aspect of the phpbb software however if it is financially motivated then i guess this is the way malesurvivor is trying to make up for last years losses.

Not trying to upset anyone just being frank and honest with regard to the way i see this change.

Fellas,

I was kidding about "buying" your old nick. Hence the "wink".

There is a converter for phpBB that may make it possible to port UBB into phpBB and keep everything. There are bugs in the conversion process so I am unsure how successful this will be. I will keep you informed of the progress.

MS Administration, fellow members:

i do not understand this whole issue but, i am all for saving money as long as we do not lose too much in service AND the new system is secure. that is all i have.
