Has anyone had any experience with conversion therapy from homosexuality to heterosexuality with either NARTH or Richard Cohen?

I am considering this as an option to get out of my situation (married and gay) and was wondering if there might be anyone who's gone through this?

Thanks.

jimrh,

I want to post something positive to you...

but I honestly can't. If you believe in God then you know that he would never let you off the hook for this task so easily as to join a group like NARTH.

I wish you peace and happiness but God has better plans for you than these frauds.

I have encountered both good and bad experiences from NARTH/Exodus Int'l programs. However, this may not be for everyone. My personal experience and belief system realizes that NARTH can work for those who are not truly gay but have had some intrusive disruptions in their orientation usually from trauma growing up. Yet I also believe there are those who are, by natural orientation, homosexual. How do you tell the difference? Therapy by someone who knows both approaches to treatment - one to facilitate change and the other for acceptance.

While some people may disagree, founders of this theory - Elizabeth Moberley and Joe Nicolosi - are friends of mine and have been house guests at times. Their theory has aided many seeking relief from their pain; however, I found this to cause more trouble (guilt, shame) for those who are truly oriented to same-sex partnerships.

For those who are born homosexual, to try to change their "natural" orientation is as disruptive and damaging as converting a deep hearted heterosexual to be gay. These folk are best served to understand their preferences and accept themselves as normal and seek a well adjusted healthy moral life. (I believe in being moral whether gay or straight.)

I have supported many guys in both persuits and they are enjoying satisfactory lives with their chosen partners. Many - both gay and straight - have families (children). Their children are well adjusted as any other children can be.

In order to seek either path is to know yourself. A good, qualified therapist usually is necessary to walk you through the stages toward healing and healthy sexuality.

I know this area is complex and deep, far-reaching issues need to be faced, discussed and resolved. But I share from experience and what I've seen first hand.

Good luck in your journey!!

Howard
