This might seem like an interesting choice to share because the song (1979) predates summer camp abuse (1985) by six years. However, I’ve often written about the “minor key” when it comes to my choice in mood music. Maybe it’s the 4/4 time signature which connotes marching toward the inevitable. Yes, it’s a 4/4 beat in this minor key which connotes marching toward the inevitable whether it’s for good or ill—most likely for ill.
I can only think of one other song that encapsulates a sense of foreboding and latent malevolence than this one—despite its pseudo-cheery lyrics. The other one is from 2007 which is 22 years after summer camp. It’s quite malevolent.
I played and recorded this weird little nugget years ago - I used: Fender P Bass Elite 1, Fender Stratocaster, Nord Synth, Drum track (some loop - some live)... recorded using Steinberg Cubase and Fender Amplitube (VST plugin effects). I think I modeled the bass through a Fender Bassman 300 amp, and the guitar tracks were a Fender Virbolux with a slew of effects (epsecially the glissando guitar played with a spoon over the strings). I personally hear a little NIN and Sonic Youth influences...
