Media reports around inadequate paedophile sentencing

The newspaper that I read on a daily basis: Daily Mail, today, is covered in articles about inadequate sentences dished out to paedophiles.

The storm has kicked off over the sentence given to a pervert that raped a 3 month old baby girl.

There are some general leading articles, plus one article by a fairly new columnist.

I have responded from my perspective of how survivors of historical crimes are also treat when it comes to sentencing and lack of support.

I have e-mailed both the columnist and the newspaper letters page.

I have currently (almost immediately) recieved automated responses. I await further response.

I don't know what impact sending these e-mails and complaining in general actually has!

In one of the articles, it states that The Attorney General is complaining about sentences dished out to Paedophiles (apparently he has drawn up a list of 200 judges that have been too soft). I complained to the Attorney General recently about the results of my case, so maybe it takes the snowball effect - if enough people complain, something may come of it! Maybe I did have some impact!

more and more people are becoming aware of this injustice thanks in a large part to increased media coverage. i hope some day they put real teeth in the law to punish these people. good luck with your efforts. i hope it helps you find closure and heal.

Rik,

Sounds to me as if there may have been some inpact as you say. That's why I think it so important to speak out when we are able. Raising awareness is the only way change can begin to come about.

Good job, Bro.

Lots of love,

John

I have just recently been invited to sit on a government panel for the VVAPP which stands for the Victims of Violence and Abuse Prevention Programme. I will be representing those of us who have suffered organized systematic sexual abuse, this steering commitee has been put together by the Department of Health and the National Institute for Mental Health in England. It is primarily going to be in action to bring services for those of us who have suffered sexual, pysical and emotional abuse up to date in a way that at present does not exist.

Mandatory sentancing for sex offences is one of the things I have suggested as well as consistancy in sentancing. I am also going to bring up the explosion of pro paedophile sites that are emerging on the Internet two of them being hosted by ISP's here in the UK, one of them is being run to advise perverts caught up in Operation Ore. I have alredy written to numerous MPs about this precense online and it looks as though action is not to far off by way of the Labour MP for Luton South Ms. Margaret Moran. If any of you guys have anything you would like me to bring up at our first meeting in London during July please let me know either on here or by PM.

Your input could change things for all of us and those (unfortunately) that are to follow.

If interested here is some info with regard VVAPP.

Rik,

rest assured that the beast who did that to the three year old will probably face life behind bars.

The 'tariff' means nothing, the severity does.
A tariff, is the earliest time he is able to apply for parole, the reality is, the parole board would never dare free him.

The columnist may reply, but I guess he wont, papers are only interested in explosive stuff.
I emailed the big papers in UK about doing a one off column on resources and links, and also awareness signs.

The Mirror gave me a flat NO, the Independent are still thinking about it, guess they take more than six months to think.

Heads would roll if the truth was told to the public, so I guess they pretty much sit on the lid till it blows off in their faces.

Kirk I appreciate that you are joining this group to make a difference & thanks for that.

The first thing that you can tell them, is that, I have read the link, and lost interest once I read the page on OUTCOMES! It indicates a 'Women's Mental Health Policy'. There is no mention of the same thing for men!

That to me is typical of the support available in general. What do they imply by this? Men just get over it, so we don't need a policy for them? Sorry if that is not true, but that is exactly what the link implies to me!

In general, the support available to those with mental health problems caused by abuse, is in my experience practically none existant! I would consider that when I finally broke down completely (over 3 decades after the abuse took place)and told my Doctor (I was cracking up completely at this point) that I had been abused, I was an obvious case for instant help (I would probably have sectioned myself if I had been capable of doing so).

If I had not received support from my employer in the form of emergency counselling, it is at least 95% certain that I would be dead now! I was asked by my Doctor if talking to him for 5 minutes had cleared my mind & if I was OK? Poor bloke did not know what had hit him! I was offered a referal to a Clinical Psychologist. I reveived a response 3 months later stating that I had an appointment for 6 months after that! Absolutely disgraceful!

If the group you have mentioned, also has any influence on the debate about sentencing, I don't mind adding further comments here! I have many!

Best wishes ...Rik

Yes I was somewhat bemused when I saw that even more so when I saw the publication date.

Just to put your mind at ease that men are included within the VVAPP I have a pdf document that the Dept of Health by way of Professor Itzin sent to me with the second round of questions for survivors of CSA ... is there anyway I can get it to you as of this moment it is not available online which is a shame.

I would really like you to see it so as to get some feedback.

Cheers

Kirk, OK, like Rik, I find the services on offer are a complete and utter disgrace.
After seeing loads of doctors, a psychiatrist on two occasions, I have not been diagnosed with anything but depression.

What we need is a one-stop referral, not bounce off doctor to doctor, we need a place which can diagnose and guide us into the right therapy.

Its a big story to tell one doctor, not multitudes of them, so maybe I type out a user manual to just give to every doc I meet.

If I was a kid looking for help, God knows what help I would get!

Put that to them, and I would love to see the pdf file, you can post it here.

They will send the link in an email, then post the link back here,
