Male Survivor Month??????????????????

Male Survivor Month??????????????????

Where I go for my malesurvivor group, there is a large and engaging display about Sexual Abuse Prevention Month. I looked at every piece of the literature--all mention women. This is a national organization that got some kind of declaration that May is SAPM.

Two thoughts:

1) we work to have a month declared Male Sexual Assault Prevention Month OR Better I think,

2) Educate the present group that they are not really having SAPM if they totally ignore boys and men who are and have been abused.

It would be a big undertaking either way. What they have is a poster, a brochure and about five or six pocket size guides and information material. They would probably want us to do all that work and then send it to them and if they feel it is up to the standards they have, they would use it and I presume print it all up.

MAYBE, all the abuse prevention folks should get together and have Abuse prevention Month--SA, Phys A
Elder Abuse, Emotional and verbal abuse, prison abuse and etc.

It really bothers me that boys are left out, men are left out, in fact I am not sure they mentioned girls much, mostly adult women

I am going to go get a copy of everything they have so I have some idea for a start.

If we do not do something whjat will get done in a marvelous way is NOTHING.

I admit to be crabby--I have to go to a prom tonight. I love the kids, I despise the excessive noise that is in the room, I think they think it is music.

Bob,

I think this is a great idea. Please keep us posted. Let us know who are the organizations that sponsor the materials you saw.

I just had to laugh when I read this. Umm, I'm not sure you'd want to be next to my car at a traffic light these days. Linkin Park, real, real loud. :)

Thanks,

Joe

Bod,

Let me know how I can help you with this. I'm not working right now so I have some time to write letter's, e-mail, or even do some research on the net in order to help with this. It is sad that people that "clam" to sponcer SAPM forget about the littlest victumes and forget about an entire gender. Let me know what I can do to help.

It's definately necessary to include both halves of humanity in any discourse about sexual abuse.
It would validate&educate many people out there to have more info of the abuse of males.

But does anyone feel that "issue months" (and days) are not enough?

Are we saying that sexual abuse prevention only deserves attention/should be practiced one month per year?

Of course this applies to all the months- black history month, gay month, environment month, women's history month, et cetera...

The fact that they exist implies that when we're out of one of those months, it's back to business as usual and all the atrocities that come with it.

Bob,

Great idea.

I recently picked up some SA Prevention Month materials at a booth in a mall or something. I'm sure there's some good stuff in them, but when all I saw in it was women I got PO'd & tossed them into the circular file.

Jer:

When I was in college (a loooooong time ago!) we had a professor who always came into class first thing in the morning with a huge mug of coffee. On it were the words: "I'm nothing without my morning coffee." Had to be from that cup too.

So we took his favorite coffee cup and held it for ransom. To get it back, the esteemed prof had to stand on a chair in the cafeteria during lunch
and "sing for his coffee!"

The prof did so--rather well, I must admit--and we promptly brought him out a steaming mug of nice
fresh coffee--in his prized coffee cup!

Enjoy your morning coffee my friend.

But keep an eye on your cup!

are those for REAL ? - what the hell is "Lumpy Rug Day" all about ? The mind boggles..........

as it does when people can organize a "Sexual Abuse Prevention Month" for just a small section of the population.

Perhaps it's time to lay claim to the movement in the name of ALL the abused whatever age or sex?
If the lumpy rug collectors / fetishists, or whatever it is they do with lumpy rugs, can claim a day then surely we deserve some time and thought as well ?

There really are some good ideas here. James, I will get material on Monday or Tuesday and communicate who and where this comes from.

A month given over to SAP can only be of value if it gets spots on TV and radio, billboards etc. Seems we need to remind people of the horror many of us either are or have suffered.

I think what sometimes happens with these is that they get people interviewed on TV, or they ask local officials what is being done in the city where they are. Things like that can get things going so people can offer to speak in schools, at clubs etc.

A reporter on a local station here gave my org. some really good exposure, video clips, some powerful stuff.
When I complained to him that some orgs are getting huge spots for programs that they present as though they are existing, but they truly as just in the works, he had some great advice.

He told me that reporters are always on the look for a new story, or someone new to speak on a topic. He told me that he had gotten a letter about AIDS. In the letter was a Rolodex card, and a letter telling them that they too have things to say about AIDS and that the media does not have to go to the same well every time. He told me that he did in fact contact the guy when he wanted to do a piece on AIDS and it was a really good piece that got good feedback.

These are the things that make a difference through out the year. But if no one knows who to contact, they contact the same people all the time.

Believe me, I know that if I were to send a letter and a rolodex card to the media here, saying that I have something to say about boys and men being sexually abused, I would get calls with in a day or two. You do have to give some ideas though as to what your, (my) angle is.

We do have lots of stuff worth while to put out there, but we have to have facts and be willing to share personal stuff and not panic when the camera is on us or the mic is in our face. The first time I was on TV i was a bit nervous, but when he asked some questions I had suggested to him he could barely get me to shut up.

Dave:

Yes all those days are for real, at least here in the USA, tho I don't think most people pay much attention to Lumpy Rug Day--which I still have no clue what its all about.

As to SA Prevention Month, yes it should be a time to remember & help all who are sexually abused, and prevent any more abuse.

Victor

Ditto Victor.

National Police Day - now there's a scary thought.

Lost Sock Day - where do the bastards hide?

jer

p.s. it's my coffee mug and it's rigged to explode if anyone besides me touches it! :D

Jer, it's too bad the good prof didn't think of that!

Hey James!

I dropped by the counseliing center today to get the info on sexual assault awareness month. I learned a lot.

First, did you know that sexual assault prevention and treatment groups have apparently select purple as our color? I didn't. They gave me a purple ribbon to wear and said that when people ask me what it is about I can tell them about CSA--not necessarily mine or anyone else's.

All the material they have is published by the counselling center, or the Wisconsin Coalition Again Sexual Assault.

Then, there is a interesting and compassioante card, a triple fold, that is published by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered group. It is very good.

If you are interested in looking at some stuff here are two websites: www.wcasa.org and www.mkelgbt.org.

I have not looked it up yet, but there is also a www.ncasa.org I bet.

April is the month devoted to this.

The lady that works at the center said that it is good feedback that men want more info out there about our abuse. They did feature male abuse at their big shindig this year.

I am sure we can get some good coverage next year by simply contacting the state and local groups, as well as the national.

Lets keep looking for stuff to suggest to them.

Bob

Bob thanks for the helpful info & the great ideas.
I plan to start looking into this in my neck of the woods.
