I've a few things I do for myself. Things to make me feel better when I am frightened or down. Being scared is something I do a lot of....

a) using a real badger hair brush and Wilkenson's Tub Shaving cream to shave
b) reading junk SciFi. For example, for John Brunner, I'd read "Stardroppers" or "The day of the Star Cities" I would not read his great works like "Stand on Zanzibar" or "Do androids dream of electric sheep?" They require thinking....
c) eating food that is bad for me

What things do you do?

I go have manhattans and a cigar at by favorite bar (too many last night--sorry guys who were in chat). Probably not the best things to do.

If it's day time I sometimes go to a particular church downtown and I pray. There are always people there.

I'd have to say a good cigar is one of my favorite and most frequent treats, too.

A long drive, preferably cranking some good music, or a relaxing walk in a beautiful spot(which I don't do often enough).

Watching a funny movie always puts me in a good frame of mind.

Reading something challenging and entertaining because I want to, like a history or biography of a good piece of fiction. (I read junk mysteries, etc. every night to put myself to sleep and a lot of technical stuff for my job.)

Who else has some good suggestions?

I don't reccommend this, but I go shopping. It gets awfully expensive around here when i get depressed! ;)

I see you are in DC too. Ever go to Georgetown Tobacco? My favorite cigar shop.

But there is something missing around here which they have in other parts of the country. Cigar shops that have a lounge. A friend has one near him where you can rent a small locker by the month (they even put a little bronze plaque on it with your name) and stash your bourbon or whatever and just hang in the lounge. That would be nice, and cheaper than going to Town and Country or wherever.

Compulsive/excess shopping as a response to being depressed is a form of acting out and not very healthy AND is something I have long been guilty of.

Take care,
Bill

ok next post will be back on topic.

A real treat/stress reducer for me is to sit back and have a cigar. I am fond of Hoya de Monterays. Fantastic.

I don't have too many of them, but they are a special treat. :D

"I am fond of Hoya de Monterays. Fantastic."

I'll look for it.

I have a Macanudo Hyde Park waiting for me.

I also like to do home improvements. Not only does it distract, but I accomplish something. I have recently painted almost my whole apartment, built custom book shelves, and I am now starting a project for the bathroom involving a mirror, an antique steel and glass shelf which came from the senate men's room when they renovated, and birch.

I do read, but if I am too stressed I cant really focus, but for relaxation and distraction I like travelogues a lot.

I also paint and draw, but of course that is not an option for everyone. And I spend a fair amount of time on the computer. ;)

Quick hijack:

Uh oh, cigar talk. This could take over the board.

Daniel, yes I work in D.C. I have been to Georgetown Tobacco, but it's a little out of the way for me. I make too many lunchtime trips to JR or Draper for my own good, but they're nearer my stomping grounds. Signature Cigars on M Street has sort of a setup like you're talking about. A sofa/TV setup and lockers. Plus a terrific variety in their humidor. Sometimes in the winter I stop in to get out of the weather, but I'm not a member.

Also, if you haven't been to Shelly's Back Room you may want to check it out. It's a terrific cigar lounge where you can bring your own or buy from them, they'll also rent you a locker if you want one. Great place for a quick dinner and a cigar or just a place to grab a drink and a cigar. Really a heck of a place.

Bill, the Hoyo deMonterey's are one of the first cigars I ever smoked years ago. I still have one now and then when I see a good price on them.

Now, I'm gonna light up a Fuente Curly Head (yes, I'm a cheap bastard). But I love paying $1.50 a stick for Fuente tobacco.

OK, cigar smokers are everywhere I guess.

I read about and watch Film Noir...that brand of 1940-60 crime dramas with the cynical world weary Fate that I overidentify with. Bogart in Maltese Falcon, Hitchcock, Lang:s movies. It helps me to realize the character I have played in this fateful game, and helps me identify bad Characters too. I:m having real trouble with the Fate thing as of late. Shopping for budget Noir DVDs has historically fit in too, but I:m generally poor now and can:t much spend. I don:t smoke cigars, but I did once smoke alot of pot to have some daily joy, but my lungs got pretty destroyed, but that:s the subject of a new topic...

I have made purchases at Signatures before, also JRsthey are on my way to almost everywhere I go (I live just a little north of there). I knew you could hang out at Signatures, but somehow it didnt seem like I could. Maybe the membership is the key. Also I got the feeling the people were mostly from those two strip clubs by there. Not my crowd.

Never heard of Shelly's until now. I'm meeting a friend at metro center next week for dinner. I'll check it out.

Bingo! ;)

Last night, after my first meeting of a new "group", I bought a large bag of corn chips (with a diet cola ;) ) and munched all the way home on the streetcar (the Toronto version of the trolley).

And me getting my gall bladder out next week...sheesh.. Oh well, I could stand to gain some weight.

I'm another 'cheap' guy!
I smoke the small Swiss "Villager" cigars and have 1 or 2 each day, which is better than the Cafe Creme ciggarete sized cigars that I smoked a pack of 10 a day.

I'm going to try hypnosis to stop completely - soon

Exercise and books. I could live in Borders and 24 hour fitness!

JW - lots of things, but they don't involve smoke (although I did get some complaints earlier in the year for letting off fireworks that I hadn't used at New year - didn't think anything that cheap could be so loud).

I play electric guitar through my headphones...I can make as much noise as I like at anytime of day as no one else can hear.

Ditto with rock music & DVDs

I also watch any stupidly childish DVD or Video (ever seen The Fast Show). Sod what age group it's aimed at, I'm 12, 47 and any age in between that I want to be.

I'll eat anything that takes my fancy..it could be some unusual cheese with decent crackers, some good steak with full trimmings, or a packet of cashews. Sometimes even really cheap tortillas that taste better than most of the expensive ones.

Sometimes I buy nice wine (if the social scene is quiet one weekend it's cheaper than going out anyway). Recent decent bottles have been: Conchay y Toro, Winemakers Lot Merlot...very nice, as was d'Arenberg The 2001 Custodian Mclaren Vale Grenache (15% and full of stupid giggles) - both very smooth and about 8 per bottle (usually 5 can get a decent one).

I also talk to people (I am under instructions to do so) - lucky that I can.

Last night I felt a bit down after going back to the abuse sites & it was getting late - I actually telephoned the Samaritans for the first time (no you don't have to be suicidal)at about 01:15am & spoke to a very nice lady that brought me back up a level or two.

I plant things & watch them grow (mostly).

It sometimes takes a bit of getting started, but it's always worth it!

Even attempting to smile in the mirror - that can usually make me laugh when I look like a miserable bastard.

I practice keeping my chin up - I'm sure you can too!

Best wishes ..Rik

Not super low cost, but I like working on old cars. Well newer cars are a real pain in alot of ways. But the oil change is alot easier on my new car than my old s10. The filter was right between the oil pan and the exhaust manifold. I don't do therapy, so this is one thing I do enjoy that is therapuetic.

Shooting is not real cheap, at least the buy in costs. But a box of ammo is a fairly cheap way to relax.

A good workout relaxes me.

I get so much satifaction for building my new 4x4 ready for next seasons competitions.

I've spent hour after hour welding and cutting, hammering and bolting. I'm building this thing from the chassis up!
And I am doing it on the cheap as well, I have a great talent for spotting something useful in friends sheds, and then claiming it :D

When I've got a 12" grinder in my hands I'm in a different world!

Dan88: Thanks for the recommendation. I went to Shelly's tonight with a friend. Didnt eat, but had cigars and a drink. I liked it. Great place to know about when I'm in that part of town.
