Just got home from the Voices Conference

I just got home a couple of hours ago from the Voices Conference which was in Minneapolis. The conference went very well and my workshop on "relaxation" went very well. I also did chair massage and had some awesome experiences with the people there on this. As I touched their lives "literally", they also touched my life in so many ways. It was a very beautiful exchange.

Mike Lew had a workshop that was only 1.5 hours so we couldn't really do a lot of what he would have liked to do. Instead we just shared our stories with one another and even though I've done that before, it is a very powerful and moving experience. I also got to reconnect with Mike Lew which was good for me as the last time he saw me, I was in a much different place in my healing.

Another massage therapist that was there also does Watzu which is a form of water therapy which involves breathing. I actually trusted her enough to let her do the work with me and it was so relaxing and healing.

Jeff and I along with two other ladies went to a mall near by that had a "build a bear" store. We made our own teddy bears. We got to pick out what type of bear we wanted, then we stuffed it, put the heart inside of it before it was sewn up. Then we gave it a name and they printed the birth certificate out on it. It was an awesome experience in more ways than one.

At the talent show, I sat down at the piano and let my hands create music like I do here at home. YOu have to know that normally when I do my music, it is when no one else is around because I have to get in that "space". So for me to be able to relax enough to do this in front of people, is an amazing thing.

There was so much that went on in these three days and it is hard to put it all into a post. Just meeting other survivors and sharing in an intimate way has changed my life.

Male Survivor did get a couple of mentions. One time was at a banquet that Voices had to honor people who were playing key roles in helping survivors and helping to prevent child abuse. Mike Lew of course got an award and someone else from the University of Minnesota. I don't remember who brought Male Survivor up but someone did. Of course the brochures I had from Male Survivor were displayed for everyone to see as well.

Anyway, if you get a chance to go to a conference or retreat that deals with survivors (like the ones Male Survivor holds or even Mike Lew or Voices, or anything else), make sure you go. I know that sometimes it can be pretty scary to go, but your life will never be the same after you go. Meeting other survivors face to face in a safe place will change your life.

Probably will write more as time goes and as I begin to process everything (and of course rest up from this event).

The conference was a remarkable experience. I would encourage anyone who has a chance to get together with other survivors to do so. I think there were only six or seven male survivors in attendance. It would be nice to see more men take advantage of events such as this (or Mike Lew's workshops).

This site was referenced during the closing ceremony. They noted that the malesurvivor.org get-together in Minneapolis gave them some speaker/presenter ideas for their own conference in the city. I think this goes to show that the good work done by one survivor organization goes on to help others who are reaching out for the same cause. Another example of good energy going out into the universe and touching others in ways that go on and on.

Thanks, Don, for making the arrangements and contacts that allowed me to attend this year.

Great to hear that this was so good for you guys. It is surely true that when male survivor's get together some surprising and good things happen.

Well, Pres Fred is asking for suggestions for the next MS conf scheduled for next year. Unlike VOICES, this one is totally about male victimization issues, for both professionals and survivors. If you haven't been to one of these, you don't know how empowering they can be. You can add your comments, questions or suggestions to the new site designated for the 2005 conference.

Ken,
Will have to check this post about the 2005 conference out and give my 2 cents worth. Now trying to figure out how I will make it to three conferences in 2005. UghaUgha!

Regardless, meeting other survivors face to face is a life changing experience.

It doesn't look like Voices have gotten the link on their site yet to Male Survivor and I will email them again on this. I know with the conference that just finished, they were very busy.

Oh, I forgot to mention that there was an article in the Jul 18 issue of the Minneapolis Star Tribune on sex abuse and child abuse in the Amish community around that area. They talked about how secret it was and how well hidden it was. I don't think it was gender specific but may have focused more on women. Regardless, it was nice to see this taking the front page of the Sunday paper.

Just thought I would share this with everyone.

Don, speaking of Conferences for Survivors....

SAVE THE DATE....NOV 13, 2004

The William Alsonson White Psychoanalytic Institute along with the Manhattan Institute for psychoanalysis is conducting a 1 day conefernce. The main theme will deal with Clergy abuse but of course all survivors and or professionals are encouraged to attend.

MALESURVIVOR members get a SERIOUS discount...I believe it is $25 for the day....all others will pay about $100 for the day. I think SNAP and Link-up members may also qualify for the discount.

Just a few of those speaking will be our own Dr. Richard Gartner and Mary Gail Frawley O'Dea. She spoke very candidly at the Catholic Bishops conference in Dallas. As a survivor of clergy abuse I have been invited to speak as well.

At the end of the day there will also be an award winning play put on by Martin Moran dealing with recovery and healing. I HEAR THIS IS SIMPLY OUTSTANDING! People have been paying about $100 to see his show in NY.

It will be a great day and I hope you and others will join us. Please help spread the word...Saturday, Nov 13th, Mt. Sinai Hospital in NYC. More details to follow soon.

Regards, Mark

Gathering with other survivors is a great, life affirming experience. There is still room in the Level 2 retreat in September. I urge any previous retreat attendee to reconsider attending this event.

Thank you for the information of how it went. I am glad that you found it a positive experience.
