Hi, Doug. I often find that the hardest thing to do is to get past the fear that anticipation of something triggers. Very often, the fear is an old abuse-related response and being triggered by something in the current situation. It can sometimes be so powerful that I just can't seem to get past it.
However, I have learned that, for me, it is important to do whatever I can to push through the fear and do the thing anyway. Every time I do, I feel better, find that I absolutely did the right thing, and the fears slowly lose their power over me.
The only exception is when I know or feel pretty confident that the fear is more than just old feelings and responses being triggered by present circumstances that realistically are not any real threat. In cases where the fear seems to be due to a real current threat that could truly hurt me, then I need to think more carefully and might decide that the very real current risks are too dangerous.
Good luck with your decision! If you think that your fears are more about the past than the present, then I encourage you to try to push through them and go register. Either way, I will be pulling for you and support you in whatever you decide to do.
