I guess the real tragedy is that dysfunctional parents rarely see the terrible harm they are doing to their own kids. They always find some excuse for what they are doing, and usually the excuse just makes the child feel even worse.

I doubt they ever consider what it would be like to have a parent like themselves, but if they do I am sure they have some nonsensical argument to show how it "wouldn't be all that bad".
