I went to Barnes & Noble after I got done with my tutoring yesterday and was going to buy "The Courage To Heal Workbook" because I SERIOUSLY thought I had some work on issues to do. Then I saw, "Barney" the Barnes & Noble bear for sale.

Don't know why the bear caught my eye, but I kept thinking of two things. After my rather traumatic therapy session, my therapist (she'll be finishing up her internship soon, and I'll have to find a new one. I'll miss her) told me to do something nice for myself that was non-abuse related. And I remembered what Mike and some of the other brothers said about getting some sort of protector for the nighttime.

Needless to say, the workbook stayed on the shelf for now and Barney came home with me. I can't say if it stopped the dreams, but it felt good to hold the little guy like when I was a kid.

Thanks to everyone for their concern. It felt good. And now I have a bed partner that will respect me in the morning. :D

Peace and love,

Scot

Hi!

I have a teddy bear, too. He was gotten for my kids and has been handed down. Now they are grown and on their own so he and his memories are now mine. I slept with it for several years after my first wife died and before I married my second wife. Now he sits on my pillow beside my wife's teddy bear in the day time. He's special to me and I have memories of going to bed and crying myself to sleep while holding him. He asks for very little and he's always there for me.
I hope your teddy bear stays special to you and helps you when life is tough to 'grin and "bear" it'

Way to go, you made a good purchase. I remember getting an A*W root bear for christmas one year when I was in foster care. This bear was much comfort to me many times, my only regret is that the bear got lost in the shuffle of my many foster care moves. I've been thinking about buying a new one but not sure if it would be the same. I loved that bear.

Way to go Scot. Talk to him and make him real. As everyone else says they are with unconditionally.

Scot,

Peace and love is what you'll get from Barney.

I have a bunny, named of all things Bunny. I have no imagination.

Peace and love back at you,
Bill

I live in a houseful of teddy bears and other stuffed animals, my wife just seems to adopt them as she see's them. Unfortunately the Merrythought Teddy Bear factory is just down the road and every time they change the window display she's in there !!

But King of the Bears in this house is "Eye-Eye" a battered and tired old bear, he's 52 this year, and has one eye.
So perhaps "Bunny" doesn't lack imagination after all Bill ?

Eye-Eye lives on the bed, and has scared the hell out of me more than once in the middle of the night ! But even though I've had to adopt him, I wouldn't let him go either.

I also have a bear that my mother bought for me just before she died of cancer - I thought it was a bit strange at the time, but now I understand.

I haven't given it a name, but I think it's called 'Handwash Only'.

When my wife read about survivors and stuffed animals in "Abused Boys" she decided I needed a stuffed animal. She picked out a lion. He had some name on the tag, but I named him, "Lion." It seems to fit him well.

I was a little miffed that she went ahead and did that. (Don't tell her or Lion I said that, please. :) ) I was at the store with her and didn't really want to buy anything that was there. I thought if I were to buy something for myself, it should be green. And maybe it could have a purple jacket or necktie or something. (Lion has lion colors.)

A couple weeks later I was at the florist to get her some flowers and on their top shelf, sitting way up high, was a green bear wearing a purple ribbon. I got the flowers and the bear.

My kids started calling him, "Bear," but I told them that wasn't his name. I didn't know his name until I tossed my jacket into the front of the car one day and it landed on him. (He and Lion ride up front if there are no people sitting up there with me.) I said, "Sorry, Joe," pulled the coat off him, and learned his name.

Thanks,

Joe

I kind of envy you guys and your stuffed animals--I keep giving mine away to some kid. My kid needs one so I think I'll get one and respect my kid enough to not give it away.

I loved the images of you guys and your various bears etc. A feel good thread for me.

I have to jump in on this one too! A buddy of mine gave me a "Hagrid" from the Harry Potter movie. It was a joke because I'm Russian Orthodox and he thought the doll looked like a big old Russian guy. He had no idea how much I liked the Harry Potter books and Hagrid in particular. I set him aside for a while, but I read in Mic Hunter's book "Abused Boys" about getting a stuffed animal. Well, I thought Hagrid would do fine already. I had a bear I was once going to give to a woman I loved years ago, but she broke up with me a day before I was going to give it to her, so I thought that would probably not work for right now (sorry, Ralph old boy). One night when feeling particularly blue and shaky, there was Hagrid and I'll be darned if it didn't help having that stuffed toy to hug. Even cynical gifts can have a good outcome!

Enjoy the bear. Tell him Hagrid says hello!

Way cool thread, guys!

I don't have a teddy bear. Guess what I have instead? That's right, a stuffed cat. I love that cat. I remember shortly after coming to this site I read about Mike Church getting a teddy bear. I have to say that was exactly what I needed to see then. So I went out and found Sylvester. I almost got a lion but Sylvester is much more appropriate. He sits on my shoulder and I can talk to him and cuddle with him. Perfect for those moments of very intense emotions. Yeah, Scot, that bear will become a very special friend.

I have a stuffed monkey named Gorg. I have had him since I was a young child, even before the SA. He sits on my book shelf and keeps me safe as I sleep. He is worn in places and his hands are beginning to come off, but I would never get rid of or replace Gorg.
