How do you relax?

How do you relax?

Ok I ask this question because I would honestly like ideas and be able to compare the things I know with what others may know. In addition, I would love to see any and all ideas as some of these may be used in my upcoming workshop at the Voices Conference that I will be doing. Plus you might have ways you relax that I have never even considered. No matter how small you think they are or how great you are at practicing them, I would love the opportunity to hear about them.

Looking forward to see what comes out of this discussion thread and maybe we all will learn something new as well.

Thanks
Don

OK, here are some things that I tell people to try.

Listen to music. Many people when going through the different stages of PTSD forget that things like music exist. Play either uplifting or soothing music in the background at gradually increasing levels. Music effects moods. Even when you are barely aware that it is there.

Add more humor to your life. Television, movies, anything. These can be done in the background too, or directly.

Another thing is to go out and try something new, anything new. Any time that you do something new, it takes more concentration than anything that you already know.

Now, for relaxation, music, meditation, reading, anything that works. I know that when anxiety levels are high, it's hard to do most of the things that people would normally do to relax.

Another thing that I think all psychologists will agree with is to do physical things. Emotions can not exist without the body being in various physical states. If the body is tired from physical activities, high energy emotions are not capable of being produced.

There are other things that you can add to your life that may help also. Such as some of the suggestions that are popular in self help books and different things. The power of positive thinking. The seven healthy habits. Other things like that. Look in the mirror and tell yourself something good every day, etc..

I, myself find it almost impossible to relax when anxiety levels are high. The main thing that works in those times is the physical activity. Doing the rest of these things helps to reduce how often levels get that high and allows for more relaxation during other time periods. This allows the body to remain in a more constant and stable state.

One more thing that many people forget is to drink a lot of water. Yes, water helps. Water always helps the body to stabalize.

classical music relaxes me.

watching my aquarium relaxes me.

reading my Bible grounds me, and gives me a sense of inner peace. in fact reading period does to an extent.

riding my bicycle relaxes me. physically it is taxing, but mentally it allows my mind to rest and relax.

Good thread. I can stand to learn something about this. I remember when I was on my way to the psychologist one day last summer. I took an out of the way route to get there. It was a twisty, curvy road through some woods and past a few farms. I put the windows down to smell the air, and I kept my speed not much beyond the limit. (Don't tell on me. It's one of those "grippy" Subarus and I love driving it.)

Anyway, I was nearing the end of the "short cut" and I realized that I did not feel relaxed at all. I felt restrained. I mentioned that in the session, too.

I'm not much better at it now. I have to be doing something. If I'm not being productive, I get really down on myself. Time's wasting, after all. If I'm not useful, what good am I?

Not really a particularly useful contribution to the discussion, but it's all I have right now.

Thanks,

Joe

Relax, RELAX, what's that ? ? ? ;)

A couple of ways:
  • Kick back and have a cigar
  • Candle light bubble bath with soft music
  • Blowing bubbles (although my cat becomes very UNrelaxed)

Well, Hhhmmmmmm ....

Read, Read the Bible, turn on the sound machine (ocean waves, et cetera), journaling, talking with my wife, walking.

(I just wish these worked as well as I can list them ;)

Even though I still do it as work, with coaching and such, I still skate to relax. After doing it for twenty years, it is where I feel most comfortable. I love the feeling of being hot because I've been working hard, but feeling the cold come up from my feet. There is certain clean smell of the ice that gets in my nose and my brain and makes me feel like I'm where I belong, and am doing what I'm supposed to. I can do other things to relax, like read or write, listen to music, watch some tv, do other sports. But that is what always helps me the most.

Relaxing? I am not good at relaxing, but I try a few things.
I try meditating
Nice, hot bubble bath (so luxurious)
Listening to nice music
Writing, it used to be my soul source of therapy
Exercising, lifting weights, followed by a sit in the sauna

I know every person is different, and what works for me might not work for others.

Things that work for me include:

(1) Holding my cat. He is so cool, and the way he sees life helps put things into perspective.

(2) Listening to music from a time in my life before I started to hate myself. It's not music that most people would consider relaxing, but for me it is. It brings me to a place where I feel safe and worth something.

(3) Watching baseball, especially when my team wins (go Cardinals!). It can get stressful when they blow a lead in the 9th inning, but right now they're on a 6-game winning streak, which totally rocks.

(4) Writing songs. I used to be great at this, but now the words don't really want to come. I had a slogan: "put my pain to music". It really helped a lot to get things out, and exorcise the negative energy from my brain.

With that said, it's almost 2:30 AM and I can neither sleep nor relax at the moment. Time to hold the cat and listen to some of my favorite tunes.

Jeff

Reading, and that many times leads to catnaping.

I run as well but I'm not sure that comes under relaxing. I don't really like it but it's good for me.

I love to sail! Just the wind and the water with some Jimmy Buffett CDs playing. Music relaxes me...all kinds except country. Reading light books like Carl Hiassen or Randy Wayne White books relaxes me. My mind races constantly, so anything I do to keep my mind off of things is relaxing. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but housework relaxes me. It's something to keep my mind occupied and I have a finished product there when I finish, a clean and orderly house. Got to have that order! I can't relax until I do.

Roland - aww yes, a good catnap! Those are always so nice.

Jacobtk, I like the sounds of the lake and could almost picture it.

FLRich, Sail - never been sailing but love being out on the water if I get a chance. One of my favorite places is Key Largo and J Pennekamp state park. I was actually thinking about housework. I'm not sure if I would say relaxing for me personally, but for some I know it definately is.

Well Im not really sure what to put down because all the things I do are listed above and MrDon said most everything. But I will say resiting poetry is always fun such as, A peach is a peach a plum is a plum a kiss aint a kiss with out some tounge so open your mouth and close your eyes and give your tounge some exercise. lol. Anyways great post thanks for starting it.

Leosha, try one of these.
:)

More ways to relax:
Sing soothing songs to myself
lying on couch with my dog at my feet
reading
praying

I joined a health club and it helps a lot. I Tire out and I'm able to sleep better. I also listen to music as, it's a distraction in my mind. It can also change my mood as long as it's up beat. That's when I'm down. Which is most of the time.

Hope this helps.

Devon

I wish I could do this but, I'm stuck with the Boston Red Sox  That's just depressing. Last world Series Win. 1918 :(

Maybe, I'll switch to the Yankess. ;)
