Goodbye- sort of
At the stroke of midnight tonight, I will be off the Board of Directors of MaleSurvivors for the first time in ten years.
So, I will be gone but will still be involved with MS at least for the bulk of 2006. I agreed to chair the Conference and that will take up a good deal of time and work. I will continue to moderate the At Risk and Sexual Identity forums until someone is willing and able to take them over. Of course, I will be reading and responding to the 2006 Conf forum.
I will no longer be the Board member in charge of the website, although there is no replacement person designated yet but Thad and SAR will continue to run things as they have done so well over the past few years.
During my time with MaleSurvivor, I witnessed and helped move the movement (which is how we started, not as an organization) to the biggest and best organization devoted to helping male survivors, their loved ones, and the professionals who work with them. We have dealt with many controversial issues and I believe MS has developed a "big tent" approach while keeping integrity to serve the population we set out to help.
Although I could have comfortably retired by now had I gotten minimum wage for the time I spent with this organization, I truly got back more from all of you (and the many who are no longer here) in terms of learning and growth. I hope that will continue when I finally finish my book for survivors which is the product of working with all of you and the other survivors I've met over the past 20+ years in my practice.
My wife just left for the airport to join our daughter in Austin as she goes into labor and it looks like I'm going to be a grandfather this last day of 2005. I will join them in a few days since I'm probably the least necessary person down there right now.
I trust that my fellow Board members will be up to the task of bringing MS into new and better areas (such as an improved website, more features, video streaming for training professionals, and lots of other fantasies we might be able to achieve in the next few years.)
The organization will grow and thrive with your help if you join with paid memberships, encourage your therapists to list with the resource directory, attend and participate in weekends of recovery and the conference, and get the word out about MS and sexual abuse to the public.
There is much to be done and I hope you will be part of this organization to help it grow and help other survivors as well as yourself.
Please consider volunteering for the conference, whether you will be able to attend or not. We need people right now to identify organizations, agencies and other places that can get the word out for our "save the date/call for papers" announcement that will be going out in the next few weeks. Keep checking the Conference forum for updates and I look forward to working with you and hopefully meeting you in Cherry Hill next November.
Sincerely,
Ken
