Hey Mark,

Considering those two guy penguins in the Central Park zoo are (famously) gay, and many other species have been observed engaging in gay and (gasp!) even lesbian behaviors, it's not necessarily inappropriate here. Gives a whole new slant to the idea that we're 'unnatural' actually.

;)

John

The gay penguins in Central Park have broken up, to be sure. I contacted the zoo a few weeks ago to set up a time to see them and I wanted to donate money to support them. I learned that they split up but there are many gay animals in zoos around the country.

Enjoy the zoo, though! I was at the National Zoo (Smithsonian, DC) on Friday and saw the baby panda bear and a young girafe. The panda bear is so amazing to see! ENJOY MARK!

Best,
john

Mark,

Fabulous. Thank you for a long-distance trip -- I had a blast. John, I'm sorry to hear about the NYC penguins splitting up -- do you know which one got the condo in Wilton Manors?

;)

{{{{Guys!!!}}}}

But perhaps all is not lost!!! Can Moose not have a word with the penguins? Surely the condo in Milton Manors is not worth the sacrifice of their relationship! And Moose, can they not trust his wise counsel? He can have no interest in the condo himself. His antlers won't allow him in the front door.

Much preening,
Larry

Well, if you don't know the story of Silo and Roy, the gay penguins, it is VERY SWEET and a bit heartbreaking (from my perspective). I've become sidetracked with their story, as it is so oddly related to human nature.

Roy and Silo, were observed "ecstatic behavior" (as penguins do it, a movement with their beaks) and the zoologists were fascinated. They were together all the time and the other penguins accepted them as a couple. Eventually, they were given an egg to hatch since they had even gone so far as to try to hatch a rock. They cared for the young as if it were their own and sent her out on her own.

Last year (2005) Silo left Roy to mate with a female. Roy is now alone, but apparently happy.

It makes me sad for Roy; I want to find him a mate! I wish our families could learn from nature.

Blessed night to all,
John

John,

What a cool story - I think I vaguely remember it since I recall something about them trying to hatch a rock. Thanks for sharing this.

Much love,
Larry

Mark,

Thanks for the cyber tour of your zoo, and the surrounding scenery. I was especially interested in your picture of the rhino. I saw one of those creatures in it's natural habitat when I was in Kenya. Scared the living you know what outa me 'cause it seemed to me the side of that van I was in got really thin about then. Monstrous thing it was. We couldn't get away from it fast enough as far as I was concerned. Everyone else in the van wanted to ooooh and ahh over it. Scared me so bad I forgot to even snap a picture. I made up for it tho cause I was the only one on the trip that got a pic of a cheetah.

Thanks John for the story of the penguins. Great story.

Lots of love,

John

There was something, I dunno, kinda RCMP about the old one. (And yes, I know that it really didn't look anything like a mountie). Made me feel safe.

Glad you're feeling like expressing yourself through a grinning avatar; made me grin here in VA.
