Below is a link to a speech given to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops on the effects of sexual abuse. I found it very useful even though I wasn't abused by a priest.

I was not abused by clergy either. I did find it interesting reading, although there is some of it I do not agree with, or do not find as true withing myself and many others. Thank you for posting it.

Gotta vent! Triggers: On War, Vietnam and Priests

Being a Vietnam Vet made it interesting reading; why could she just
state a war veteran? So that was #1, #2 was her noting about
burn survivors well I worked as a medic at the Army Burn Center
in 1968, #3 yes, I do not like Catholic churches (certain parts) and
would walk across the street to avoid most Priests.

Her agenda was to send a message, to Bishops and such.

Enough for me to seek out a 12 Step Program for Catholics
Hi, I am Joe and I am pissed at the Pope

Seems Id like to add in many, most CAS become very good people
in their careers and good deeds. Granted we are dealing with a
lot of baggage.

Well, no Viet Cong or NVA ever tried to molest me, none violated
any trust (my government did that), grief is different for a soldier
as it was not me that died or was maimed. I have no hated for the NVA
after what 37 years, I respected them as soldiers. That took me say 25 years
to reach. I can never forgive Nixon for carrying that war a lot longer than
was needed. But he wanted re-election. That PTSD is still around
and the current war does tear at some of us today.

But the Catholic Church I knew was 47 years ago and the pain, loss of Trust
has not diminished. When we come across an aberration in the military we
usually bring the bastard to justice that is soldiers acting out of conscientious
belief in what is right. I may hate my abused but the man I despise was the
Priest who heard my Confession and never dropped a dime to see the
abuser was dealt with.

There was a shortage of Priests in the military during Vietnam: most
were at home leading antiwar protests (good that they did) but they
left us just as the other Priests did. A few served with the highest distinction and
Valor.

OK, vented!
