How do you tell if you are simply having a dream or a repressed memory is coming out?

I have been having the same dream for a few weeks, and it is starting to disturb me. The dream, or memory, is always the same and in it one of my brother's friends molests me. I seem to remember minute details, like his scent and what was on the TV in the background.

How can you differentiate (sp) between a dream and a memory? I am wondering if I should mention this to my T, but if it is simply a dream, I do not want to be wrong. Any ideas? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

How bout telling him what you just told us. He should know the diff. If he doesn't we sure won't LOL

I had the same dream/nightmare for about 7 years and it drove me nuts. The only thing was I could not put everything together and unlike most dreams I have, I could actually remember this one. Most dreams, I never remember. But for me it started out for about a year ago, with the color purple, than progressed to me feeling like I couldn't breathe, than feeling like I was being held down and I then finally realized the purple was a bedspread. It wasn't until one very lonely thanksgiving day that I put everything together along with the face involved and I punched my door on my home so hard that I almost broke my hand. My hand hurt for days because of the force at which I punched my door when all of this came together. It was at that point, that I could say for certainty that it was not a dream.

Give yourself time and don't rush it. You will know in time what to think of everything.

Casey,

I don't know how to tell the difference. But it seems that the ambiguity itself is something you could mention to your T. If you're in a process that will take some time, as Don's did, you might as well let your T know about it now.

Dreams come from somewhere real, after all.

Thanks,

Joe

I wish I had something more concrete. I've had dreams that were creepy and led me to question a person or incident. And there have been one or two where I woke up from them knowing that part of the dream was a recovered memory. There was just an internal knowing that eventually led me to discover the more complete picture of two different instances.

Hope this helps.

I have had that in the past also, where I keep having a dream over and over, and wondering if it is dream or something real. I think talking with your therapist about it is a good idea. If nothing else, it can maybe help you get some details better in your head, to help you to discover for yourself whether it is real. I wish you luck.
