Does a survivor need more reassurance?

Does a survivor need more reassurance?
I was looking into the Chubb Institute which is a computer repair/networking training school. Anyway, I was talking to my brother about me quitting my job and going there full time for the 9 months needed, he asked me why I felt I needed to go. I explained to him the situation with my job and he told me that it was the same in the computer repair department in his fortune 500 company. Anyway I guess I need some more reassurance and something to look back on to tell me I know what I'm doing. Wondering if survivors need more reassurance.

BTW: the cost is $17,000 which I will probably be able to get student loans for.

Edited to add that I think my mom would support me finanically in my decision not to work

Jason,
you worked quite long enough to know that it is right time to move for something more.
I do not know much details but I think that I remember that you were talking about bad situation in your company, that you were forced to do many jobs at once and that you were bad paid.
Seems perfect time to move ahead.
Be very careful in decision what course would you take because that will influence your future income.
I am not much familiar about present situation on IT market in US but for my opinion (I quickly check Chubb Institute web pages) you should go more on networking and skip repair (I think that you learned about repair already enough).
Security and networking are major issues for every bigger company. So it shouldn't be problem to find good paid job with nice career prospect after you finish course. Of course do not forget that better career means much less free time for leisure :) . Also your brother was right, do not expect the perfectly better situation in bigger and more famous companies. Human relations are everywhere very complex especially on working places in bigger companies were we can found different interests among people on different positions and everyone was overwhelmed with many projects with short time schedules.

Now this is one more advice from your IT brother from the East. You will be learning a lot of things. Try to expand more and beyond learning program, use Internet, specialised IT groups, documents, library etc. whatever you can find but go for more. Investing in knowledge is just partially money and training course it is more about will and ambitious.
I am telling you all this from my experience which is very long story, believe me I know what I am telling you.
Naturally feel free to pm me if you want.

Needing more reassurance, I would agree with Andrew, yes. I think we do. Because we are so use to negative, to things 'blowing up' in our faces. Even when something works right, it is hard for it to 'sink in', for us to believe it. When I was still competing in sport, if I won something, most of the time what I felt was relief, and mild fear that they would realize their scoring mistake or something and take it away.

I was not to fond of University, but I did go, and earned my degree. I am not sure how much I will use it, but it does hold power to 'open doors' more then someone without the technical and academic knowledge. I would never disagree with anyone making a decision to further their education and training. I wish you good luck in whichever choice you make.

Jason,

I really agree we need more reassurance, things in the past may have gone so much in the wrong direction, or we just sit in the same old situation and wait until the hatchet strikes.

Modern technologies go in leaps and bounds, it would be really good if you can get qualified to do something better, I wish you luck whichever way you go.

Nice to know your mom is so supportive,

Jason,

Just want add my comments. I know for myself that I need lots of reassurance. I have a really crappy self-image most of the time - though at least it's progressed from all the time. I need the reassurance simply because if I don't get, I will second-, third-, and whatever-guess myself.
