I have been seeing an EMDR therapist for a year now, and we just started into the actual EMDR. But about a month into our meetings, she dropped our insurance carrier. Ever since, we have been paying out of pocket.

She charges $75 for regular sessions (a discount), but when we started the EMDR sessions, the sessions jumped to $110!!! How can I do this? We are in a crunch right now, and this isn't helping the relationship with my wife. I spend a lot of money (and have) on my issues. She puts a lot of her wants aside so I can be in therapy. I need help there and with money advice.

I posted earlier about going to a local art therapist, but I am also concerned about "jumping". I have done this before--but one was because of similarities to my mother, and the other...finances AND spiritual differences.

Please...I could use some imput.

Well if it's any help at all, I pay $55 for 50 minutes. That is going up in April to $75. I see her every other week so, yeah, it's a little pricey. I have a goal though and that is that all this therapy and drug therapy is temporary and some day I will be able to deal with all of this on my own. So, in the mean time, I pay and I look forward to the day when I can stop paying that because I can deal with all my baggage on my own!

I use a sliding-scale, community based, non-profit counseling center here in Austin. An excellent place called the Waterloo Counseling Center. Because of my lack of income I pay the least amount possible for individual psychotherapy which is $30.00 per hour on a weekly basis.

The same man also runs a group therapy session for gay males that I belonged to. The normal charge there was $40.00 per weekly session which was an hour and a half. But for me he reduced it to $20.00.

My psychiatrist here charges $75.00 per 15 minute med check visit, which is about once a month. He is aware of my financial difficulties and has made several helpful concessions for me.

Hope some of this helps you. My biggest learning experience was to be able to speak openly and honestly about my fears and financial troubles. Once I did that, all of these people assured me that they would not let money stop me from getting the help I need. That felt so good.

The main thing was that I had to be open about myself and to keep asking for help.

I wish you much success in your ongoing journey. I am so impressed by your willingness to seek help along the way. Good for you! You will find the help you need because you are determined to get well.

Regards,
