coffee break
We had an interesting discussion at work today, sat around drinking coffee and smoking again.....
Just 5 ordinary guys working at sewage plants, that's how ordinary.
But we were all reading the tabloid headlines about the tragic dissapearance of the two 10 year old girls who have been missing for over a week, Holly and Jessica.
Naturally the conversation soon got round to pedophiles, sex attacks and abuse, internet porn and chat rooms, prison, hanging and slow torture. Also, and I was slightly surprised by this, the effect on the victims.
None of these guys know about my history, so the talk was totally unrestrained. And we were a mixed bunch to some degree, two young single, one middle age single and two middle age married - myself included. Different educations, two skilled, one semi, two unskilled.
I came away after well over an hours talk with my head whirring, but so proud of the common decency of my workmates. Yes, slow torture was an option talked about, but so was the lifetime of trouble endured by the victims. Unanimously they agreed, and talked realistically about, the way victims were surely effected. Nobody spoke from experience to my knowledge, and I kept fairly quiet.
Bur I did feel that this unlikely bunch were far more aware of what goes on than I would have ever given them credit for - much to my shame. Not once did the talk descend into "yeh... but they fucking loved it , asked for it the fucking perv's !"
Yes, we cracked a few bad taste jokes, but no bad taste opinions.
I was reassured after that, there are good people out there. Most of them ordinary people like us.
