Unfortunately I miscalculated what I could make at work, so I have to move back to my parents house for awhile till I can get a new job. Anyway, I'm wondering if its appropriate to write a letter to my lanlord breaking the lease or see him in person or call him. The lanlord is the owner of the business so its not like its some big company.

I feel very anxious about telling him in person, however I don't want to look wierd or inappropriate
 
It depends on your comfort level and how well you know the landlord. If he seems to be a reasonable guy, I think that he will understand that you made a mistake. Of course, you probably will lose your deposit, but should you need a reference in the future, you know that you've been up-front and honest with your current landlord.
The second-best way to tell him is through a letter.
In either case, I think it is much better to let him know that you had financial difficulties than to just leave the property with no explanation. I think that any reasonable human being can understand mistakes.

If you have a good reason to break your lease and you have always been a decent tenant, then go ahead and speak to your Landlord. Some people are friaghten of the word Landlord. My gut feeling is that he will let you break it and may even give you your security back if there is any. Go ahead, It happens everyday!

Well, I just talked to my landlord today, everything went well I can move out on July 1st. Why is it that as survivors we always assume the worst? Or atleast I do.

Thank you to everyone who helped me out, I appreciate it.
 
Why is it that us Survivors always fear the worst. HHmmm, I think it's because we been through the worst and deep in our minds we are always the underdogs. It's good to see a Dog have it's Day. Glad things turned out all right for you!
