Checked out the bibliography page, feeling a bit overwhelmed - so many books !

What do you think the best three are, especially for a newbie ?

Thanks & BearHugs,

ShyBear - I cannot say what the best books to read are!

I can comment on what I have found to be available in England, so maybe stock levels indicate volumes sold.

I have:

Victims no longer by Mike Lew (ISBN 0-7493-1656-x) - problem is I bought it when I was at my lowest, so will need to read it again to identify if it is/was a good read. The book is frequently mentioned here, so I suppose it's a good starting point.

I've just started reading - Rescuing the Inner Child by Penny Parks (ISBN 0-285-65089-0) & it seems OK - I need to complete the book before I can fully comment (again it is often referenced here).

I've also bought Catching Monsters by David Bright (ISBN 1-84454-087-1) - he is an English Detective that was actually involved in bringing some murdering paedophiles to justice. First 2 chapters of the book deal with this case (that's as far as I've got). It doesn't help me feel better about being abused, but it does make me realise that it could have been a whole lot worse.

Sorry if I've not been much help, but I'm aware it's a weekend & things usually go quiet then. My poor answer is better than none - I expect that others will be along shortly to offer you better guidance.

Best wishes Rik.

Shybear - If you are looking for affirmation of your abuse - symptoms that we all share and ways to stand up against them, I suggest: Mike Lew's-VICTIMS NO LONGER, and Mic Hunter's book on ABUSED BOYS. Realize these books may trigger and solicit more memories. Read while seeing a T.

If you are looking for methods to address feelings or ways to get at feelings, Laura Davis' book on HEALING FROM ABUSE is good. The drawback is it is written originally for women; however, you can apply it to your own circumstances.

Hope this helps!!

What Howard said is really important. I started to read...actually I searched the index for feelings I was having in Mike Lew's book. I actually got more depressed reading...or rather searching through the book for the things I was feeling. So I think it is a good suggestion to be seeing a therapist while reading them, his book did trigger, for me at least it did...just a little cautionary note.

Good luck!

All good books. Another I'd like to add to the list (getting long again) is Wounded Boys, Heroic Men: A Man's Guide to Recovering from Child Abuse by Daniel Jay Sonkin, Ph.D. It covers physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.
