I'm losing my T in a few weeks (she's moving cross country), so I'm deciding what to do next. She & I met today, and one of her recommendations was body work, specifically Trager. I'm somewhat familiar with the concept of body work (Feldenkrais, Reiki, therapeutic masasge, Healing Hands, etc) but I've never really done any of it, and especially not as a next step in SA recovery.

I'm open to the idea, in fact, my "still small voice" approves, but I'd like to hear from any MS members who have experience with body work, whether positve, neutral or negative.

Thanks guys !

I once went to a chiropractor who specialized in some sort of therapy (dont' remember the name of it)... basically she did deep breathing herself and focused her energy in different parts of the body. The sessions were about an hour each. I remember hearing other patients sobbing, crying, etc as their emotions were supposedly being released. I never had anything that profound from the experience except for some out-of-body experiences and visions.
Now, I didn't go specifically for emotional healing - I was going for back problems. So, my experience was rather neutral.
But, as I understand it, "Body work" focuses more on healing the body by releasing memories that the body holds. I believe that it has a lot to do with somatic problems - maybe I'm totally off-base here.
Hope the info helps.

I have had good experence with Reiki, when I was in KY for 10 days. I also had what I would call a super great experence with something call Cranial Sacral Therapy. I could feel the 40 years of pain leaving me as Mary's hands worked her power on me. I bock down crying like a baby as wave after wave of pain flowed from my boby.

I would highly recomend Cranial Sacral to any one. You should be in a safe place in your mind because of the way the hands are layed on you. She was very good about not tiggering me.
Best of luck Tom

Shybear,
I don't post here much anymore but do read from time to time and saw your message. I've been using bodywork and somatic therapy to help continue my own healing. I realized that there was more than psyhcology could do and there was a lot locked inside of me. Fortunately I've got a somatic therapy person down here that understands what it is to be a survivor and he has helped me greatly.

In addition, I've also become a licensed massage therapist so I'm using my skills to help others. I don't like to just give a massage as I'm heading more for somatic work. I just took my Trager Level 1 class last month and have had a lot of trager done on myself. It is wonderful work.

Trager can be done with clothes on which I actually prefer for myself and for working on others. It is not something a client has to think about while they are on the table because the practionier if they are present in their own body is working with the client's nervous system the entire time. It is a very subtle way of doing this but very powerful. Sometimes the effects are right away and sometimes they have shown up in me a couple of days later. There have been a couple of sessions where I have cried because of beautiful realizations that I got from the session. It is a very nurturing touch and a very safe/supportive touch. It is very beautiful work.

I'm working on the certification process in this which is extensive. I've got three main class levels to go through plus a minimum of 30 practice sessions each time plus a lot of work on myself as a requirement. I still don't think I'm doing that much with the person and yet the effects I'm seeing are so profound that they blow my mind away.

Trager work grabbed my attention because it is about the body becoming more aware, more free and more connected. For myself, recovering from all the effects of the trauma and the paralysis several years ago, trager is exactly what my body was looking for. In the short time I've been having trager done on me, it is changing my life in so many ways. Trager just works with your body where it is at and it allows your body to do whatever it needs to do at that moment. It doesn't push you beyond where you are which I really love. It is so gentle, nurturing, caring and supportive.

I even find that I get as much from giving a trager session as receiving. It is very powerful work.

One book on how the body stores trauma that is excellent is "Waking The Tiger" by Peter Levine. If you haven't read the book, I would encourage you to take a look at it. It explains how the animal world deals with trauma and then applies that to how we as humans deal with trauma. If trauma is not released from the body, it has adverse affects.

Anyway, I hope you give Trager a try and if you have any more questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I'll try to answer any quesitons you may have or find someone that can as I'm just learning this process.

Take care,
Don

Shybear,

I have had really great experience with Reiki, therapeutic touch (which, ironically involves very little touch at all), as well as deep tissue massage - which is what I am getting weekly right now.

The Registered Massage Therapist (R.M.T.) I see incorporates a technique of encouraging me to breathe deeply and yell (and I do!) as he finds knotted areas. When the pain reminds me of an abuser I yell at him/them and I had a good cry the other day as I yelled at my mother.

I am upfront about my history which seems to make the treatment a better two-way conversation.

Peace,
Kenn

I would love to have hands on massage because I believe it can be so good for stress relief.
But unconsciously my mind react to touch in a way that touch means hurt.
I always dream of a day when I can relax like that, and just have my whole body massaged to relieve some stress.
I know a place that does this for nothing, and I would really love to go, but I dont know my reaction to anyone touching me.
I hope I can break this barrier, because it is my body, and I should not have these barriers to touching me,

A big THANK YOU for all your replies !

ste : The first time I got a professional massage, I was very uptight about it, but I was able to keep my Adult in charge, re-assuring Little Me that everything was OK - after a while, I relaxed and it was *wonderful* being touched.

Shybear,
The first time I got a massage I thought it was all about sex. Then when I went to a professional massage therapist in NC, I got through about 3 sessions with the lady until the massage triggered me so badly that it was years later before I went and tried it again. It isn't easy for a lot of survivors.

Just thought I would share that with you.

Don
