"America Is Me" written by the Clinical Social Worker E.R.Frank is without doubt one of the most powerful novels I have ever read, and one I would recommend.

But I would also warn readers that this book is also highly triggering. It's not graphic in a detailed sexual way, but it made me draw a deep breath more than once.

It also made me cry more than any book I've read before, but not always out of sadness.
More often than not I experienced the sheer joy of the central character, America, and I cried tears of joy.

America is a young man, a boy, who finds himself in various institutions and under the wing of Doctor B. his therapist. The story tells a tale we know all too well, but it's told well - and I wont spoil it by telling more.

It's not an easy book, but it is ultimately a VERY rewarding one.

I read the book based on your recommendation. Unfortunately, I got to the abuse part late last night, and I had to finish the whole thing before I was able to go to bed! Good thing it was a quick read!

I thought it was a pretty good book, even though I'm not typically a fan of young adult fiction. (I actually thought it had rather graphic language for a young audience.) The prose got a little schmaltzy in places, and some topics got a shallow treatment in the book. But for me, it was one of those books that illicited such strong emotions that I could overlook any perceived flaws.

I'm glad you 'enjoyed' the book, although it isn't an easy read, especially for survivors.

Yes, it was a bit superficial in the way it dealt with the whole process, but for me that was it's strength, it didn't dwell on anything, the author gives just enough to keep the reader involved and rooting for America.

It was my kind of book I have to admit, I enjoy the new writers that the US seems to have these days.
So many people knock American culture, but the new writers are amongst the most thought provoking to be found anywhere.
