My t and I have discussed the topic of Altruism. He talked about altruism is a selfless act to help others and by doing so you are actually helping yourself.
Then we pondered, is it truly selfless, if the end result actually benefits you? It was an interesting discussion.

Anyways it got me thinking about something that I started doing years ago. It was something that I did for other people, and it made me feel good because they would occassionally tell me how it helped them in their life. That was a reward, that is uncomparable to any monetary compensation.

Unfortunately, When I started having conversion disorder with Non-epilpetic Seizure due to sexual abuse and was diagnosed with it, I stopped trying to be "altruistic". My system fell apart. I fell apart. I had a nearly impossible time with just surviving the day. Being in the intense therapy made it impossible to look beyond myself.

Today, I want to take charge and change that. I want to resume what I did before and see if once again I can make a difference in the lives of others.

What I started 5 years ago is something called Happythots. Perhaps you have heard of them, perhaps not. Happythots was my altruistic way of trying to feel good by inspiring others. It is a funny name, but here is the concept:

I look for a humurous anecdote, inspirational quote, funny saying, or something ponderous and uplifting. It isn't usually very long. It takes merely seconds to read. I then send it via email to those that have requested to receive it. I am hoping to send one at least weekly, and perhaps daily. In the past, it has had a positive impact upon the receiver. As many will reply back to me and tell me something like, "I really needed to hear that today because..." and they go into their life's story for that day on how it made an impact upon them.

I never have charged anyone to receive the "happythot." it always has been and always will be free to the subscribers.

I invite all of you to subscribe to this free service and see if it may help in any way. I know it will not be curative, but I know that any little bit that helps, helps.

To subscribe is very safe and easy, I don't need to know anything about you. All I need is an email address. To those that wish to subscribe, please goto:

https://www.happythot.com

and follow the subscribe Now link. And you will be prompted to enter an email address and nothing more. I am looking forward to doing this again.

Best Regards,
Lorne

Yes I think your T is right on target, and mine has shared with me similar things about the importance of helping others to my own recovery.

Is it selfless if it benefits you?

Well, is it better to be selfless, or unselfish?

Don't you just love it when people answer questions with questions?

Yet, how am I to "love my neighbor (as myself)" if I don't love myself?

Ooops, I did it again! :p

BTW, WTG, taking charge again and being altruistic!
