Affliction
I went to this because I love Paul Schrader (wrote Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, directed Blue Collar, American Gigolo, etc.) Nick Nolte's depiction of a grown man trapped in the traumas of his past completely knocked me out. I left the theater and burst into tears. Called my older brother and asked him if our father hit us, why was I having this reaction this movie? My brother informed me that we were hit regularly...hard. This opened up painful doorways to my past that had been totally closed tight and in some ways was responsible for my eventual breakdown which led to going to therapy and beginning my recovery.
Affliction is an absolutely incredible film. If you can stand the darkness and brutality of this story, I highly recommend it.
