I put on a movie today that I didn’t realize exactly what it would be about and it’s actually a perfect allegory for the men on this forum. It’s called “The Turn of the Screw” a 2009 BBC adaption of a Henry James novel of the same name from 1898. The novel was also used as the inspiration for the second series of Netflix’s “The Haunting of Hill House” which was called “The Haunting of Bly Manor” which is a more loose adaption and doesn’t work enough for this.

The plot is a ghost story, there are many direct scenes of abuse and rape, but it’s more of a slow burn ghost story.

It focuses on themes of abusers corrupting the abused to become destructive or negatively forced themselves. How abuse and evil can spread and how abusers make their victims “like it” and it also discusses grooming.

I like how it depicts our strange behavior/anguish as a ghost of our abusers still hurting us, which for me is a positive in the moment.

Really good writing, acting, and film. The plot is great and entertaining where you can also forget about it being about abuse and the allegory, but it is also keep making connections.

The film is “The Turn of the Screw” from BBC in 2009. It’s available for free on Tubi and Amazon. You can also watch on Peacock with subscription.
