I dont know if anyone has ever read this horrifying novel, but it describes the process by which human beings hide attrocity from themselves perfectely. The silence is almost the same for any attrocity, and it must be broken on ALL levels, not just ours. We are but a few survivors of attrocity, the entire world lives in the shadow of the ever-present silence that grips humanity.

But time and time again, mankind has shown his strength and compassion in bringing an end to attrocity. This nightmare world did not come about precisely because of human virtue. It is the reason the USSR disintigrated, it is the reason environmental laws have been created and enforced against heartless capitalism, and it is the reason we are all here now.

I have been unfortunate enough to stumble upon some of the darkest places in human existance, and have been willing to take a glimpse at things even worse. And even there, where we are at our darkest and most sinister, the light shines all the more brightly in contrast.

George Orwell was a remarkable writer, and the films don't do justice to his work.

The darkness and oppresion of 1984 is overwhelming in the book, the pictures are far more vivid in our minds.

You know one of the real ironies is that Blair was a socialist himself, i think that is why he expressed such outrage at the state of Russia and other (supposedly) communist regimes. In truth, i dont think socialism has been successfully implemented because no one thought to give it a decent shot. Whatever it was russia had, it was neither communism or socialism.

I think i believe in a socialist society that regulates natural resources, including land. There should be friendly capitalist competetion in the use of whatever is left over after making sure everybody has food, shelter, vital services, a strong military, an effective ruling body, just courts, and a generous alotment of resources to art and science. Man will continue to increase the amount of production an individual is capable of so long as there is scientific progress, and there will contune to be class struggle until it is understood that there is no longer any need to violently compete for natural resources in order to survive and prosper. All that is required is that we learn to share what we have already, which is plenty. There will always be competetion in society, but wouldnt you rather live in a world where running the race is more important than winning it?
